I see why this won. It is very well written with an awesome twist/reveal at the end! It's also a stark reminder that occasionally we should take time to think about how our pets perceive us. Beautifully done!

This was brilliant. You had us thinking it was the woman's partner who was complaining and clearly out of love with her. But it was her caged, pet bird. Congratulations on the win!!

Hey, Jacob! I had been planning to visit your portfolio and hadn't had a chance. Thank you for the great review on Pieces of Butternut and Blue.

This is cleverly written, and I didn't expect the ending, which was well hidden until the bird escaped. Great stuff! I can see why it won! Best, JohnC

I can see why this is a contest winner. I am like most, extremely empathetic to animals and how awful human beings can be to them. I'm even critical of myself. These short stories are great, because they keep the suspense right until the last line. This one especially. Good for that little bird. It's also funny to me to note the culture differences in writing. I would have written coffee stained teeth!

Wow. Second post and a contest winner! Congratulations!

Way to think outside the box...

(Or cage)

Finesse shows in your details:

"She's edging over to me, gold key in hand. She's baring her teeth, which are the colour of tea."

I was totally engaged...

What a full bodied story in 100 words!

You're going to grow a fan base quickly!

Congratulations on your contest win. Looks like we're sharing. I think you have a great idea for your "Prisoner" story. You build up nicely to the idea it's the bird who's the prisoner. If he's making his escape, he'll be sorry. It's a jungle out there. Who knows what calamity could happen to him? Well-constructed and very creative. judi

Excellent work. I always wondered what it was like for birds that are imprisoned in cages. How can people confine animals? It must be a horrible life for them.

Fantastic! I really enjoyed this look at life from the perspective of a caged bird. I also enjoyed the break for freedom at the end. I've often wondered what our pets think of us in our worst moments. This gave me some insight. Thanks for the share and good luck in the contest.
