Loved reading your Florida story. I used to live there in the 1950s to early 60s (Tampa and Gulfport)--just two of the 50+ places I have lived. It was before the fire ant invasion; however, we did experience the fruit fly epidemic. I remember standing at the street corner waiting for the bus to school and an plane flew low above the middle of the pavement spraying a load of insect poison. We just turned our backs to it and got sprayed, as well. (Happened more than once.)

The joys of living in FL! My kids still wait for the school bus with the mosquito planes going overhead.

WOW...the fruit fly fly-overs for me happened back in the the late 1950s!

This is very amusing Elizabeth and you never fail to entertain me with your posts. Every place on earth has its drawbacks and we navigate them. I am very familiar with the cockroach chase, they are not chasing me, I am chasing them and I am armed and dangerous and go for the kill. These buggers are enormous and they run like the stink! I loved your animated post and sugar is under lock and key here as the cockroaches love it! I wish I had a six for you! Love Dolly x x x

Thank you Dolly. We have the cockroach chase here too! The Palmetto bugs are the worst. I even took a picture of one that was dead on its back and I put a martini in its pincher (I think that's what you'd call it). I have to see if I can find that picture. I feel another story coming on!

Actually it was funny I was watching a documentary on your fire ant somehow finding it's way to Australia's shores, it's causing a bit of curry to our environment, of course we have crocs here, opposed to your alligators, beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

Thank you Roy. I hope Australia can eliminate the pesky critters. If I remember correctly, our fire ants were from Africa!

Lol I found this to be a very interesting and informative true story as I didn't realise that sugar could be kept in the fridge but I can't stand ants so it makes sense.

Thanks Wendy. I appreciate the excellent rating. Yes, sugar can be refrigerated, and yes it often requires hammering.

I used to think, having visited Disney World four or five times, that Florida was heaven but I'm not so sure now! Especially with what I hear about the political situation. But thank you for an entertaining and informative piece. X

Florida is really great most of the time. The summer months can be a bit hot, but we all stay in the A/C or the pool. I'm thankful, too, that we are a free state. I'm glad you found the story amusing. Thank you so much for the excellent rating.

Hahaha...
Good stuff.
My son is an executive chef in St Augustine and lives in Fleming Island. I'm going to have to ask him about these crazy Floridian antics.
I can really see the fire ant shuffle happening.

Thank you for posting and giving me a chuckle.

John

This is a well written and genuinely sweet story of your memories from living in Florida on a farm. I love the hammered sugar dialogue which creates a visual for a reader. Your colorful imagery throughout does that too. I lived in Fort Lauderdale when I was a child, for four years. My parents were older and, when my older siblings were out of the house, they thought it would be nice to live there and we moved from NYC.

We actually rented two trees an orange tree and a grapefruit, on a farm. I remember there were red ants in the ground when I sat in the grass and I learned quickly that they bite. I remember a nice woman I believe her name was Mrs Buchay although I never knew the spelling. She has a disabled child in a wheelchair, which truly made an impression on me. Years later, back in NY, I became a teacher of children with special needs, and I always reminded the child on that farm in Florida.

Best wishes,

Alexandra

It seems you became familiar with fire ants at an early age :-) I was a special education teacher here in FL for 26 years. Love my special children! Thank you so much for your excellent review.

Thank you for giving us a window into your memories and teaching us a bit about Florida life. I would like to say Washington is just as interesting, but except for the still elusive big foot, we have nothing to show.

Thank you for the excellent review. I have a friend who was a logger in Washington (or maybe it was Oregon), and he swears he saw Big Foot! That's the story that keeps on growing bigger every year!
