I was born in Bridgeport. However, that one was on the other coast, in Connecticut. Anyhow, this was a great tale and certainly fit the theme of a deep secret, as even you did not know what it was. I would try to delude myself that they were filming a sequel to "Close Encounters" but don't think I could get myself to believe it.

This is a very interesting and thought-provoking true story Douglas. I guess most of us are assuming it was something to do with extra-terrestrials and UFOs. I enjoyed reading this very much.

Or a downed US or Russian experimental craft?

Congratulations on your well deserved win Douglas. You have posted this as fiction but I do believe such deep secrets are held by every country that would bring great revelations should they be revealed. I believe there are secrets in our WWII archives that have not been revealed yet. I enjoyed the suspense here and your in-depth knowledge of operations. A fine post, love Dolly x x x

I wish the contest voting booth was spread out a bit more. I didn't make to this one.
This is an excellent story. I like how you give details but leave the reader to draw a conclusion as to is going on. It creates all sorts of questions and mystery.
Congratulations on your win.

Great post and story Doug. I can understand why this was chosen as the winner of the contest.

Very well retold all these years later. Maybe there was a crash on Bald Mt. but not of a human kind.

I guess no one will ever know except those "in the know" at that time.

Congrats again.

This is pretty wild. Your story is well told and will remain a mystery as to what was going one. It is listed as biological fiction which makes me wonder how it can be both. I see you won a contest with it and I can understand why. It is intriguing writing.

You are the very first to notice that. Which is a clue in itself.

Congratulations on your well-deserved win of the Deep Secret contest. Your story literally describes a government secret that was kept from the very military personnel guarding the secret. This story has an engaging build up with ample descriptions, and a mysterious ending.

Hello, Doug,
Mesmerizing and frightful at the same time.
I would have been a complete failure in any capacity in the armed services; While I am often willing to follow orders from those "above my pay grade," I'm afraid I question too much. Wouldn't have survived in religious orders as well. I was the kid who perennially asked the nuns in my Catholic elementary school why God put the apple in the Garden of Eden if he didn't want Eve to eat it in the first place...

Thank you for sharing!
Disturbing but fascinating!

A major plane crash? Two things came to mind for me: a terrorist attempt of some kind, or a flying saucer crashing through the trees.

The one thing missing from this story is what YOU think you were guarding. Just a guess.

I've heard that the military can be secretive, but this story takes the cake!

Thanks for sharing your experience, Douglas. And congratulations on the contest win.

A well-deserved win. The story is educational, particularly to those of us who have only visited the USA and not resided there. Congratulations.
