If it was tough for the homeless before covid , I read now it's even worse..many shelters closed due to the pandemic. many more animals were dumped also.
Climate change and colder winters in California have made living on the streets even more precarious.
I looked up Nashville ..there is an early bout of cold so Metro Nashville opened cold weather shelter.
Stevie's father was disappointed he didn't want to go to college ... he couldn't find a job...his father should have given Steve some more time to find a job instead of kicking him out.
Alone at eighteen, Stevie didn't have much of a chance. At eighteen most are still confused ... when Stevie needed the most support his father threw him out.
I'm not a parent but I don't even let my pets sleep outside.

This was so sad. I feel for Steve, I wonder if his father was ever told that he shot himself. If they did, I hope he is proud of himself for basically killing his son. I never did get to read Unwanted Dog, but would very much like to. I'll take a look for it. Well done, this was truly a sad, but beautiful story. Steve had a true friend for the last part of his short life.

Stevie's father knew, but didn't seem to care very much. I was the lucky one to be able to call him a friend. So appreciate your comments and the review.

This is a sad and terribly true life and death story that may be the same one that could be told for so many who are disenfranchised from society. Between sucky parents, mental illness, or other terrible circumstances, some people suffer daily on the street. Wish it were not so.

I know enough about you to know God was looking after you as far as Dusty was concerned, a more godly father you could never have had, and like you I've asked God, Why me?...no answer! This is a very sad story, and you are right, when I go in downtown I am seeing lots of "Steve's", that are ending up like Joe Doe on a police and hospital file. Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest and with your writings.

Stevie's story requires a bit more background in order to garnish sympathy. Was his dad right right, that he was a bum (lazy, irresponsible, disobedient), or was Dad the bum? Why couldn't he get a job? Why not consider the military?
