Sunny is so handy to have around as he puts people at ease with himself and with each other. I love that dogs, in general, have no idea about what people think is stylish or who outclasses another. They read hearts so well, and Sunny is one of the best.

Exactly right. He has no idea about such things, just loves everyone. Thanks so much for your very positive and thoughtful review.

This sounds like a beautiful place to stay and Sunny made sure it was pleasant for everyone to get along. Dogs are really ice-breakers. I'd always heard New Yorkers were unfriendly, but when went my daughter had her tiny toy poodle with her. Everywhere we went everyone was friendly and wanted to pet the cute little dog.

Yes, I can understand, as that is how it is with me too. They are great at bringing people together. Thank you so much for a lovely review. I'm glad you enjoyed this story.

Well, what a joy is your lovely dog, Sunny. (Reminds me of Charlie on a good day) - and how marvelous is this story to read. I had to smile at your initial description of Jana: 'extensive enlargement in various areas and reduction in others' - it reminded me so much of myself - the enlarged body and reduced brain - fitted perfectly.
Goodness me, what a palace she lives in with her vicious dogs! How rich is this woman? Joan Collins comes instantly to mind.
And yet, the central theme of your piece is, simply put, 'Never judge a book by its covers.' That was such an optimistic lesson for all of us. I'm sure that I should have found the woman quite repulsive on first impression - but the heart of gold is usually not gleaming at that point.
Thank you Barbara and Sunny for a sound example of personal wisdom.

A wonderful review, and your description of yourself made me laugh. I am so glad you enjoyed the story with its two messages (Dogs are wonderful ice-breakers, and Don't judge by looks) Many thanks.

Thanks for sharing the photo and story, Wendy. I enjoyed reading it and seeing the insights you have into people, places, and pets. I would have probably had a similar reaction to you and not felt very comfortable since it was grand and Jana was not your typical hostess.
You do a good job incorporating Sunny's role in this and how Jana warmed up to him, and he felt comfortable, too. It sounds like Sunny takes his role very seriously and wants people to feel comfortable, a well. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. I like your comment and question about you and Jana being "an unlikely pair...but who cares?"
A very good conclusion to your story. Have a safe trip and enjoy your visit with your daughter.

Hi Wendy,
where would we be without our trusted negotiator, Sunny. Subtle by communication, but open in her love.
A story that contains a broad range of content, that can allow a smile, an eyebrow raise, another smile, a cringe, a sigh and an acceptance... that's a lot in a small prose piece.
It looks like the Gold Coast canals, or maybe the Sunshine Coast... but no matter, Sunny looks settled and ready to mingle sitting by the pool. I hope you enjoyed your five night stay also.
I enjoyed the read Wendy... guess the old adage of 'you can't read a book by its cover' applies perfectly here?
With our thoughts we create...
the joy to be.
Kindest regards,
James

Thank you so much James! What a lovely, review, so thoughtful and insightful.
Believe it or not, this was Raby Bay near Cleveland, not far from where I grew up. There was virtually nothing at Raby Bay at that time. My husband booked it, sight unseen, on the basis that it was only a few minutes drive from my relatives, and was dog-friendly.
We did enjoy our stay, and Sunny also made many new friends.

Wow Wendy Ruby Bay. My grandparents used to live at Tingalpa and my uncle, aunty, cousins Cleveland. I remember it back in the eighties, there was a lot of open bushland until one got to the bay. But so many places have changed, major housing developments pooping up all over the place up there... guess it was only a matter of when, not if.
I played three years of my football in Brisbane with Norths and Redcliffe, but frequented the Eastern Suburbs on a regular basis. I loved it over there... you felt removed from Brisbane and the city feeling. So glad you had a good time and of course got to visit with your relatives.
Hope your weekend is shaping up to be what you desire it to be... and how's that beautiful big full moon tonight... spectacular!

It's all changed so much. We drove my mother around to the various places she'd grown up in, and I lived in Wynnum North from the age of ten till I left home to go teaching at the age of 21. I knew the street names but the houses apart from two from my childhood all looked very different.

Hi Wendy,
Where do people get the money?
"...beautiful Versace bed linen or the Louis Vuitton bathroom furnishings"
"...the canal where every home had a yacht moored at a private pontoon"
There's something very wrong in our world. Many people scrape just to get by. Others are worse off, living in tents in city parks, begging at street intersections.
Most dogs are friendly, accepting of anyone willing to pay some kind attention to them. I think many people are like that, too. They'll see the best in us, forgiving to some extent.
I always think of the movie, "Dances With Wolves", that starred Kevin Costner as "John Dunbar". When Lieutenant Dunbar first met a few of the nearby Indian tribe, there was this one warrior, "Wind in His Hair" (played by Rodney Grant), who would have rather just shot a few arrows into his chest. But the two became very close friends, with great respect for each other. At the end of the movie, when Dances With Wolves (Lt. John Dunbar) decided to leave the village and try to clear his name with the soldiers, Wind in His Hair climbed the cliff with his horse. He hollered down to Dances With Wolves and his wife (Stands With A Fist) as they were leaving the tribe... "Dances With Wolves! Dances With Wolves! Don't you see that I am your friend? Don't you see that I will always be your friend? Dances With Wolves! Dances With Wolves!" He kept repeating this, and his voice echoed down into the valley. It was very moving. And I think dogs and cats, and even other animals can have a very strong and lasting bond with people.
"He used his status to greet all new arrivals, and to (farewell all) who were continuing their travels, all this to Jana's great delight." ... (does this line need re-wording?)
Nicely penned, Wendy! Great little pup you have there in Sunny!
Hugs,
Kimbob

Thank you for a fine review, very thoughtful, and for your suggestion. No idea re the money, maybe they have massive debt. This area had only a few homes when I was a kid, but anyone who owned land or property there would have made a fortune. We live simply and pay things off very quickly.

I suppose it is the old saying, we can never judge a book by it's cover, or in this case. by the botox and fake tan. Sounds like you all enjoyed this time away, and Sunny has made many new friends. Another nice read Wendy,

Hello Wendy,
It's so easy to fall into the critical mode when we judge people based on their outside appearance. I fear that I'm all too often guilty of that. I'm so glad that you had Sunny with you on vacation. What a great dog. He would be welcome at my house any time. (Of course you would be too!) Thanks for sharing this gal.
Have a blessed day.

The story is so well told, I almost felt like I was there. I could easily envision Jana, and even though I wouldn't get surgical enhancements, I understand people who think they can improve on God's creation. It sounds like Sunny was quite the socialite, and seemed to bring people together. In your picture, it looks like Sunny is really enjoying his time in new surroundings.

What a wonderful story, I really like the buildup, from when you first arrived, taken back, wary, nervous etc.. but then with some help from sunny, you realized not to judge the book by its cover, a message for everyone, very well written****kahpot
