I loved your picture and title! I never managed to sit through Meaning of Life, but I am familar with Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. Your poem was kind of sad, but it was a good poem. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

Fifteen syllables of truth!!
A strong contest entry that should do well.
Provocative in its musing, fantastic dinner conversation...
the meaning of life.
Love the references, thanks for the author notes.
I don't think you needed the colored font in addition to changes in the font size.
Good luck in the contest.

My goodness but I hope we aren't all just a fish waiting to be a filet. (Yum...fish)
Anyhoo this is a great job of getting your readers to think with so few words used. That in itself, is a rare talent.

I don't know whether to feel depressed or uplifted by this, Craig. 'Life has no meaning' -boo. 'besides what we bring to it'- yay, I can make my own meaning. 'Then it's gone' -boo, just when I was bringing some meaning to it.
It's great that so few words can provoke in me a contemplative mood. Sign of good writing, that. Good luck in the contest.

Your response made me laugh, Emma. I just this second finished reading your contribution to the shightfight (yes, I can spell, but I was hoping this might elude the censors). Lovely to hear from you.

I couldn't resist shoving my oar in. I know I am going to regret it. To be fair, I have rejoined in the hope of writing again. I have not spent £79 just to argue on the politics forum. Honest, guv.

Well, I loved 'The Meaning of Life' (and all their films) but this also reminded me of 'A Fish Called Wanda'. It was thought that goldfish had a memory of between 3 and 10 seconds - but that is a myth, apparently.
Do I agree with your aphorism, 'Life has no meaning except what I bring to it'? I really don't agree with that. It puts me (just like our goldfish) at the center of a very limited universe. So, I am glad that I am not a goldfish, because then it might be so - but who is this with the ant eggs?

You want to be careful whose views you call ridiculous, otherwise you could be asked to explain yourself, and fairy tales don't count for much. Thanks for stopping by :)
-
I think that fairy tales count for a great deal - but I wasn't calling your views 'ridiculous' - that was a response to the quotation. So many apologies if you were offended. That was a generalization and not a personal remark.
Paul
PS If you still don't like that review I will rewrite it a different way.
-
"Life has no meaning except what I bring to it? NO! That is a ridiculously narcissistic view."
You quote my exact words, then immediately call them "ridiculously narcissistic", and that's a generalisation?
I see you're very highly qualified in theology, Paul, and I'm just a poor old lay infidel, but any time you want to head over to the religious forum and discuss ridiculous narcissism, I'm game.
I'm not offended; it's enlightening to hear what the other side really thinks. So few will actually admit it :)
-
Fair enough. I apologize for the strength of my opinion on this occasion. I should not have used the word 'ridiculously' and I thought that your words were more a generalization rather than a personally held view. That was entirely my mistake. and being well versed in something doesn't make me right either. I still offer to write a more polite version of this, even if I still disagree.

No need, Paul. And no hard feelings on my part.

I've amended it without losing the main argument. No one sets out to upset fellow writers. And we meet as equals in here CD. Very best wishes and good luck with all your future writing. Paul

Some would contend that, on the contrary, if we determine our own meaning, the possibilities are limitless. Those same people would probably find anything less depressingly unacceptable.
Technically speaking, there is no other possibility than for us to determine the meaning, regardless of what we think that might be.
Fun discussion, thanks for reviewing.

Thanks Craig. I note that we have had happier days in the past.
Best wishes.

so few words, yet speak to the point. I love the gold fish who only live to swim around and around in a small aquariaum. But then again, life is found in my mother in laws flower garden, where the flowers smell of a sweet fragrance, and give more meaning to life, when they are picked and given to a loved one, to brighten up a dinner table, where death has already taken place, but still serve the purpose of beauty to all who stop to smell the roses.

It's true. You have to give of yourself in order to get the most our of life. Take a step away from your comfort zone. It is a dismissal existence if you don't leave home. Gretchen

I love both, Monty Python's film, The Meaning of Life, and Pink Floyd's song, Wish You Were Here. I saw Pink Floyd in concert, it was awesome.
Great entry for the 15 Syllable Poem contest. Good luck!

You are so right about that. We need to make the most of the life we are given, use our time to help others. Just a few words, but it says so much..best of luck in the contest.

This fifteen-syllable, Year After Year, has the proper syllable count and suggests that life is contained within our personal experiences. Living, I assume, is the more general term.
