Thank you for sharing this peaceful life as a contest entry. I think life was better back then and I am pretty sure we need to get back to it. I enjoyed reading and want to wish you luck with the contest.

This makes me want to move to the south. Your ability to paint a picture with words is really quite fantastic, Tom.

And the prose here was superb:

Every awn on every lawn, pasture, and prairie
wave mutually to each other just as country folk do

You, Sir, are a talent.

    Thank you.

That's pretty much the way it happens in Tennessee also. It was so hot last week the only thing stirring was flies. What a wonderfully written story.

Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day, and God bless.

Thanks Papa Mike. They were the best of days. Life was simpler and joyful. It's been hot in Western NC but not much different than the past, despite what fear mongerers say.

You give something for each of our senses, and it was a joy to read your story. Great sense of time and place throughout the piece, wonderfully written.

... and thank you for your review. It's nice to be read, and even nicer to hear compliments for the pennings I write day to day.

You paint a pretty laid back scene. Nicely done. But my bet is that there was plenty of hard, sweaty work goin' on from time to time.
Every awn - every (one)?
Good luck in the contest.

awn - appendages collectively, as those forming the beard of wheat, barley, etc. (The top of grasses)
Thanks for the time and review. Always yours, Tom H

This is beautifully done, Tom, and you capture the by-gone times very well in this reflective piece, which is vividly portrayed. Excellent presentation also. Best wishes for the contest.

You've outdone yourself with your last few posts. Stories that bring an old country boy back to happy times when he worked from dawn 'til dark and was often too tired to enjoy it. Wish I had a six. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

    Where did you grow up?
I was from Philly, hated Country music, and even had a made-up dance group of boys for every sock hop from Asbury Park to Chez Vous in Philadelphia.
My father-in-law was and remains at ninety a dark to dark farmer.
I envy him in many ways.
    Thanks for your review.

I'm guessing a Philly boy leaned toward hip-hop over the railroad tracks. LOL. Yes, I envy and would surely like your father-in-law. I grew up in Bluegrass thoroughbred country of Central Kentucky. But at 15, I left home and hitchhiked to California afraid I was missing something. And boy was I. LOL. But I never got back to farm life, other than here and there visiting and helping out when my dad got sick with cancer. I told everyone I loved the concrete big city jungles. It's only now I realize what I missed. :-)

Hip hop wasn?t even I thought in the sixties.
reply by Ric Myworld on 29-Aug-2023
Sure it was, but not the hip hop of today. All those guys used to stand around and harmonize on the street corners. We used to put together a quartet and Christmas carol downtown and at the mall when we got the first one. It's started with pretending to be the Beach Boys, but us R and B people who liked Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, and the up and coming Motown crew, starting adding more gospel sounds. LOL. Way before Boyz 2 men, and the real hip hop sounds.

I always thought ?our guys? as do-wop not hip-hop and I never participated in voice but with mmy feet
As for The Beach Boys there were none better in harmonizing
reply by Ric Myworld on 29-Aug-2023
Now you've been eating smart pills, rabbit pellets. Do- wop is where hip-hop came from, strange as it might sound. Just like rap came from the original Blow Fly. The x-rated rapper who used to sell his vulgar and disgusting eight-track tapes in truck stops. Songs that went like: "if you wanna get off, you've got to f _ _ _ the boss" or "I swam the ocean on the head of my d _ _ _, ate nine tons of cat s_ _ _ _, and ain't never got sick. So, now you know why we hate rap music.

Tom, this is absolutely exceptional. I live in the south and this is old south. The story is sensational, as is your photography.

"Coniferous loblolly pines undulating" is a language of the south I don't know but sure appreciate.

Good stuff!

Pam

I've never had the pleasure of visiting down south. This is likely the closest I'll ever get to it, and I'm blessed to read your incredibly well-rounded description! The imagery you word-painted is as peaceful as it gets, I think. I'm guessing heaven might be a little bit like this, Tom.
Great writing!

Tom, This is a very nice and well written true story you have penned about your life on the farm with your wife. You used great descriptive words. I can totally agree with living in the south. I was born and raised here. Our son lives where he has more acreage and more in the country. I love going there and seeing Molly the chicken and Gus the dog! Thanks for sharing. Best wishes in the contest. Teri

Being from Philadelphia and thriiving as a sock-hop dancin' fool no one ever would have thought I'd give up Motown in exchange for the HIghwaymen and Hank Ketchum, but I did, though when a sixty hit plays on the radio my feet move as they once did. Sadly, the rest of me sits in the chair.
