Interesting haiku about frog and lilypad ... reminds me of Matsuo Basho's frog poem. Excellent entry for the Write a 3-5-3 writing prompt contest. I like the presentation too. Concrete images easy to visualize. Good syllables count and connection between lines. Good luck in the contest!

I am certainly not even in his league! In composing this post, I had no conscious effort to parrot his famous poem subject matter.

But as we know, Haiku does not have to strictly follow 5-7-5. I felt this one as a Haiku.

"I have crossed oceans of time to find you"---Bram Stoker's Dracula

I think there's something very romantic about classic vampire movies. Not the newer gorry ones. Something else we have in common. ;)

His eyes are strangely green and opaque, or perhaps those are eyelids.
Apparently a Hollywood writer introduced 'ribbit' to the masses. No prizes for guessing where he was from.
Cheers, Julie

    Julie,

Thanks for your review. In previous Super Bowl ads, ribbit was a frequent sound bite.

Two frogs, Gertrude and Heathcliff:
Gertrude: "Time flies when you're having fun!"
Heathcliffe: "Actually, time's fun when you're having flies!"
Ouch! For taking tht one, you deserve a winning contest spot!

And I'm sorry for that terrible joke! Hope a Number One spot is your reward for bearing with it!

Whoa! I feel much smarter after reading your Author's Notes! And now I have an amphibian factoid for YOU: There is a species called the Suriname Sea Toad which actually give birth to their babies out of the holes in their backs!! I'm serious! I don't know about you, but I would call that baby back ribbits!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

ANYWAY, I liked every part of your 3-5-3 poem: the words you chose, their true-haiku nature, and even the picture!

So I hope this does very well for you in the contest, Mystery Entrant!! xo

Thanks Rachel for that new factoid. Might you write a lullaby with ribbit repeated? LOL

Baby back rib(bit)s - great phrase. Frog legs taste more like stringy chicken with a fishy tang. I only had once!

What is the only mammal that can walk on water? Hint: you may see at an amusement venue.

Hmmm! You've piqued my curiosity. If it's the amusement venue here, it would be the Jack Rabbit (rabbit, not ribbit...); that's the name of the rollercoaster at Sea Breeze here in Upstate NY. Am I even close?

Mmm. String chicken with a fishy tang. Yeah, sign me up for a big bucket of THOSE, Colonel Sanders!! But, I mean, come on; just LOOK at them. Do they LOOK like an animal that would taste good? They are GROSS.

    Rachel,

Wrong location!! It is a dolphin! ? walks on its fins!! There is a Jack Rabbit Trail for xc skiers in the Adirondacks.

Rochester was once known as the Flour City (post opening Erie Canal era), but now the Flower City (lilacs).

Hey, look at you, you little Upstate historian, you!

Interesting about dolphins. They're incredible animals in so many ways, aren't they? They definitely elevate our species!

This is a wonderful image and some welcome notes about the bullfrog to accompany your very evocative little scene painted by your 3-5-3 verse. Nicely done! Good luck! Debbie

    Debbie,

My bullfrog just goes ribbit and does not die/croak at the end of my poem. LOL

I enjoyed reading your excellent work! I particularly like that you have the interesting author note as well. I thought it was a homophone and he died lol
Best wishes! Alexandra

    Alexandra,

Yes, croak is a homophone of sorts. In my next life, maybe I can employ this poetic trick for a FS post. My bullfrog just makes a deep noise LOL
