Amber, what a lovely teaching story. The loveliness is not from the ones who dismissed Mauricio, and many others like him, but for you and others like you who have stuck it out and found what real teaching is all about.
Good for you, and best of luck in the contest,
Rhonda

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Rhonda. I appreciate it, and I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. Thank you for those comments. I'm grateful I could be there for Mauricio, even though it was only for a few years. I hope and pray he's doing well, surrounded by people who love and value him. Thank you again for reviewing. Take care. :D :D

I'm glad you were there for him, too, and you never know what seeds you sewed into that young man's heart.

Hi there,
This piece is well-written and you can feel the passion in the words.
It resonates with me as well. I used to teach in England years ago and worked in schools for kids who needed additional help. So many get written off but the system doesn't work for everyone, sadly, and there's not the time effort and money put into figuring it out for the others.
All the best

Thank you for reading and reviewing, GMG. I appreciate your comments, and I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. That is a devastating side effect of our system. Hopefully, one day we'll look back and see how we changed the system to support all students instead of casting them aside. It breaks my heart whenever I see colleagues doing this. Those are children,* and they need champions to guide them through life--not see them as a lost cause. Thank you again for reading. Take care. :D :D

It is very discouraging when administrators become so jaded their students are discounted as not worth the effort. Poor Mauricio badly needed YOU to come along. Who can say how your presence in his life changed his trajectory? How great to read about teachers who will not "fold" under the pressures of management. Hurrah for you!

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Karenina. I'm glad my story touched your heart. I'm so grateful I met Mauricio, and even though I've lost contact with him, I do think about him and hope he's living his best life, surrounded by people who love and value him. Thank you again for reading. Take care. :D :D

Your story of Mauricio stayed with me through the day today. It's amazing what a little belief in someone can do to change their life!

This is an excellent story. It demonstrates to me that you were destined to be a teacher. Your empathy and compassion seems to be a constant thread throughout your teaching career. You led by example that each individual student deserved a fresh start to be all that they can be. By engaging the children, you have excited them to want to learn more and to elevate their scholastic achievements.

Thank you for reading and reviewing, PteGIJane. I'm thrilled you enjoyed this story and I greatly appreciate your comments. I believe I'm destined to teach, too, and I'm beyond grateful I didn't run from this career. I love my starfish (referencing "The Starfish Story" poem), and I'm always striving to ensure they know they are loved, welcome, and safe when they step into my classroom. Last year, I called my class "dragonflies," so they called me their "Dragonfly Mom." Teaching is a passion and calling, and I look forward to many more years here. Thank you again for reading and reviewing. Take care. :D :D

It is good to hear from a teacher who truly loves her students. In grade school, I had one excellent teacher and one very bad one who made me want to give up. I survived it and am fine now. I wish you the best in the contest.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it so much. Yes, I love my students so much, and I'm thrilled it comes through in my story. I'm so sorry you experienced what you did in grade school, and I'm glad you're doing better now. Still, I wish you'd never encountered someone like that at such an impressionable age. Thank you again for reading. Take care. :D :D

A very interesting story of a progression as a teacher.
I like to see that there are still those who fight for a system that tries to overthrow the "Mauricios" of this world.
A well-written and factual work.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it so much. Yes, I love my students so much, and I'm thrilled it comes through in my story. I've taught several "Mauricios," and they've all become near and dear to my heart, especially a kindergartener I taught two years ago. Thank you again for reading. Take care. :D :D

Well done and kudos to you for sticking to your guns. There are so many children swept under the carpet because they are "Mauricio". Unfortunately, the onslaught of petty politics and other distractions make it difficult for people like you to reach their goals and many become jaded like Coach. Thanks for persisting and keeping your goals in sight. We need more teachers like you. Thanks for sharing your story. Have a wonderful day and stay well.

You brought up an unfortunate reality of our school system--one where our kids are seen as "data points" instead of *children.* I hope our system changes one day because they deserve so much more! Thank you again for reading. Take care. :D :D

This made me happy! Happy that Mauricio made as much of a difference in your life as I'm sure you made in his. Thank you for your dedication to young students. I know teachers are spread so thin nowadays. Your work matters. I have such admiration for educators. Thank you for sharing.

I think this is a great example of how we should never dismiss people right off the bat; everyone deserves a chance, and if we stick with the discipline, tough it out through the thick skins of these troubled kids, we can get somewhere in their education. It also speaks to the truth that even if we can get to one kid, it is worth it for that one kid. estory

I thoroughly enjoyed and was engaged in your story. We never stop learning do we? Even the school administrator in a moment of frustration later came to realize his mistake. Took it to heart and became a better teacher from that in the years to come.
Very well done.
