You have an interesting interpretation of he theme. I like how you played the theme out through the eyes of Louise. She is looking at her grandparents through a child's understanding of her world.

Is this a true story or just made up?
I passed most of my school years in boarding schools but I was lucky my first two from age 6 and 1/2 to age 10 were close by and so my grandfather would come and pick me up and I would pass one weekend a month with them.
My parents were always away busy with their travel business.
My maternal grandfather would tell me about the war in Holland and about my mother growing up in The Hague.
He was a very good story teller too and he taught me to clean his pipe and play chess.
My grandmother was more detached, no stories , but we still got along.

To be scared by war is a terrible thing, but we cannot make excuses for people like this forever and they must learn to respect others and extract some joy from life. I never knew either of my Grandfathers because they died young and this man is luck to be alive and entertain his Grandchildren, it is a pity you have these kind of memories of him, a poignant write, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

This was a good story, and it truly reminded me of my late husband's parents. My mother-in-law is a very sweet person, always willing to hug and hold a grandchild. My father-in-law, on the other hand, is basically like the one in the story. He rarely smiles, or hugs, or anything of that nature. He really is a wonderful person, deep down, but he just doesn't show it. Best of luck to you!
