You are right. Many cannot speak of the horrors they have experienced, but perhaps it is cathartic to write them, as suggested. Your 80 word story will resonate with many. Best wishes for the contest.

What a great story. Your grandfather was a remarkable man. I guess being a serviceman, he couldn't talk about it but his books sure did.
Excellent creative imagery and visuals.
I found this very entertaining, thank you for sharing.

This was perfect for memorial day. A double threat. A wonderfully descriptive and emotional post for the contest and the reminiscent post for this solemn holiday. Well written. The part of his life he kept to himself, represented by the dusty books tucked away from prying eyes. This was wonderful. Good luck in the contest. Gretchen

Oh, I was wondering if they were newspapers or journals written by people long gone, or maybe a collection of letters written and never delivered. I think a tale about the written word, lasting through the generations is very appealing.

Some of those books can tell of some pretty horrific happenings, and the written word keeps those people alive. They truly were you Grandad's pot of gold, and for those of us who never knew those times, they are the books of history which we must keep alive. Well done, this is a wonderful 80 word flash fiction story. Good luck! :)) Sandra xx

This reminds me of a bar I visited in Penang 20 years ago. There were books on the counter where Vietnam heroes could write their memoirs while on leave. A fantastic write. The whispers... fantastic.

This is well-written and tells a complete story in 80 words for the flash fiction contest. I can relate as I have a lot of books and they bring me comfort in my elder years as the memories roll by for the days of yesteryear.
I want to say well done and good luck in the contest!

I like the title. It gives you a misery before you read the story.
Your opening paragraph is well written to draw readers' attention.
I like the ending sentence a: " This treasure trove of war stories, were my Grandad's pot of gold."
A very well written piece.
Thanks for sharing.
