I am not a fan of Artificial Intelligence and will continue to fight against it. I have my computer, I use to write and review on FanStory, and my cell phone I use to call and facetime my children who live far away, but I refused to do anything else on-line. I still write old fashioned checks and use cash as much as possible. I am protesting digital currency and the like. I'm right with you.

Good evening Jesse,

If your wish is to live naturally in the wild I recommend watching the movie Into the Forest in which there is a continental power outage that lasts for years. It is an unrelenting tough life, but a simple peace we all wish for from time to time until its harsh reality is imposed upon us. The problem I see with AI is that it is going to put another huge swath of people out of work, increasing poverty along the way which is the last thing we need.

Excellent Op-Ed, and is this really you? Kidding.

Thanks for sharing. :)

It's really me, Gloria! I had an impassioned commentary to write and I wrote it with all due respect to those who are unaware of the ramifications of AI.
I will look up the movie you mentioned and watch it in my spare time.
I am sorry for the late reply it just couldn't be helped. I hope you understand.

Everything invented by mankind can be used for good or for evil, and that includes AI. The only ethics it has are what mankind introduces in its programming. I don't see any point in running from it. People used to think the same way about movies, mobile phones, and microwave cooking. The need is for wisdom and careful application of any new technology - and that's where man falls down. However, I agree that a simple healthy life-style is a worthy aspiration, but I think most people wouldn't saurvive for too long out in the woods. Well expressed essay, and a thought-provoking one.

I couldn't agree with you more! If I weren't so old, I'd go back to the woods where I lived in a heartbeat. Even living in town, I live very simply, and as close to nature as I can. I I couldn't agree with you more! What technology I have - computer, television, cell phone - are very basic. I chose that way. My car doesn't talk to me or take over any driving. It's seventeen years old, a Honda Fit, and so far, no trouble with it. I gave up growing vegetables because it got too hard for me. I'll be 80 in September, and I don't need to live in a remote place without easy access to hospitals and such. I have lupus, but I treat it on my own. I've told my sons I'm going to die in the woods even if I have to run out there and lay down somewhere. lol.

Good evening, Jesse!
Kudos for you for taking on a realistic "elephant!"
First of all, I totally embrace your thought of leaving the idiosyncrasies, pace, and mounting fears associated with modern society. That is why, in part, I love living in northern Michigan. It too, has idiosyncrasies, but I can be one with nature and not deal with people for weeks if I choose not to do so.
As far as AI is concerned, I am not - at the moment - too bothered by its creation and/or presence. But that is certainly subject to change.
What truly resonates with me in your essay is your stating that "We have created a monster, and it is us."
That statement can be applied to a plethora of situations: the Internet, Facebook, vying for rankings on FanStory as opposed to truthfully reviewing a writer's work, etc...
We are our own worst enemy.

Thank you for sharing, Jesse!
Gave me "food for thought."

I think this is an excellent poem and I agree with the message the author sends.
I don't think people are aware of what is actually going on around them and what danger we are all in.

Very wise of you, Jesse. Indeed we have created a bit of a monster! To our shame, as you mentioned, it was us. To each one of us there is a monster or an elephant in the room. Each one of us tends to be the monster or an elephant that wisdom has shone upon, we are worth it. Blessings!!!

I think being self sufficient in the woods would be very hard work Jesse and your fear of AI is probably blown out of all proportion by the media. This is something the Brits have hardly ever heard of and it seems to be an American invention to frighten the public, a poignant write, love Dolly x

You are right, Jesse, it scares the life out of me. Our new television talks to us, it switches itself on when we walk in the lounge in the morning. We can tell it was programs we want to see, verbally! It makes you wonder if there is something else going on in that television! What with that and our laptops and computers, they know what we like, want, do, because the read our emails and watch what we are looking at on Google. It has started, and it's getting worse. Will there be room for me in you in the woodlands? It really is scary. :( Sandra xxx

Kudos, Jesse, for taking this on. I've seen the apps. I even tried one.
I asked the Regem AI app:

My question: Does AI create problems regarding plagiarism?

AI's answer, generated in less than thirty seconds:

"Yes, AI can create problems regarding plagiarism. Some AI tools use pre-existing texts to generate new content, which can result in unintentional plagiarism. Additionally, some AI-generated content may not be properly cited or attributed to its original source, leading to accusations of plagiarism."

-- This is "AI" telling us "AI" is a problem... is anyone listening?

Well, here we are, in 2023, and we're literally writing ourselves out of the equation...

It's one HUGE elephant in the room and we're already seeing false campaign ads strictly generated from AI... these are indistinguishable from the "reality" we live in.

I'm not sure I'm ready to go off the grid... Something inside me says you, and I, and a lot of people who understand the ramifications of this will have to remain and fight it to the bitter end!

(Meanwhile, FYI, I asked the same AI "app" to write me a sonnet about war.)

Wow-- I could have posted it here on FanStory and nobody would have been the wiser.

WHAT ARE WE DOING TO OUR INTEGRITY?

Yikes. I just got my six star "cache" for the week...but YOU are getting the first!

Karenina

Thanks for telling it like it is!
You made me think more about the issue and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
The research you gave was outrageous and told me all I needed to know!
Thanks for the sixer, my friend!
