year old mother is from
Rockaway. I grew up on

New York, wish I could move
back. I'm 65, and now
rooted in the Blue Ridge
foothills of North Carolina.
Anyway, you've weaved a
heartwarming story about
your family's gathering
every Sunday with such
a delicious sounding feast.
Your memories of that is
precious, and priceless.
My nephew-in-law is
Italian, he was one of the
volunteer firemen who
served bravely in the
9/11 tragedy. He and my
niece live in Medford out on
Long Island. They tell me
about his big family's
Thanksgiving dinners. My

Yeah, dinner at grandma's farm. But alas, there's no longer a farm. And no longer a grandma, either. And with the family scattered, well... The sad part is that my kids and grandkids have no memories of extended family treasured memories.

John, a wonderful story you have written about what once was. I think the Italian families often depicted in movies from the fifties came to mind with your story. It is sad how it all changed for you.
My family was small, with only a little brother, mom, and dad. Our special Sunday treat was maybe going out after church to a restaurant. Thinking about them now, they were no more than greasy spoons. But we thought they were grand! Excellent work. Terry.

I loved your story. In the south we had traditional Sunday dinners as well in the houses of various relatives. Our food was country cooking. An assortment of homegrown vegetables, potato salad, fried chicken or steak, homemade dinner rolls and pecan pie or lemon icebox and iced tea. Not as good as yours but still tasty. I think Italians appreciate food more than the rest of the world. I love Italian cooking. My two trips to Italy made me a fan of the food as well and the people. Italy was my favorite oversea country.

Sadly, with the passing of the older generation, those traditions are lost as the younger generation moves to the suburbs, and their interest in family gatherings disappears.

What a wonderful memoir of beloved Sunday dinners from the story teller's youth. I grew up in rural Eastern Washington state. The only "city kids" I knew were on Sesame Street. I was amazed at how similar what "city kids" did after church on Sundays to what I did. The reader stays solidly at the narrator's shoulder, back in time. This piece is a feast for the senses-I tasted, smelled, felt and especially heard the people. Not just the women asking if you want more than bringing it anyway (their role is universal in "old" traditions), but also the cutlery on the plates, the "oohs! and aahs!" as each dish is brought out and tasted. I was disappointed not to be offered my own plate but still feel like I want to send your Zias a Thank You card for letting me have Sunday dinner with your family.
Excellent details of time and place. The only suggestion is take a look at the phrase "wreck havoc". The idiom is "wreak" havoc. Apologies if "wreck" was the word you used growing up.
