How very true. A touching poem. Open hands can offer so many things from the heart, except, maybe, promises. Those must come from the heart directly. Very well written.

Read as a single line, this poem can be felt as the intro sentence to a story perhaps about generosity and its challenges. Humanity's religions and philosophies have frequently venerated generosity, which I think is far from a natural inclination of humans and the endless pursuit of well-buttered bread.
It often seems to me that FS caters to poetry whose emotion is admirable and sentimentally pleasing. This poem has an almost sermonic quality that for me detracts from its art. Talk instead about a friend who loaned me her gloves when my hands were freezing.
