Just wonderful, Debi. What a terrific story this was. That was admirable what your mother did for you, and although the experience was unfortunate, a lot of good came out of it. Not only did it show you that you were were well-loved and cared for, but the kids' and your teacher's initial comments demonstrated to you how good your poem was! Did you ever think about it that way back then? It's a hard way to learn it, but very flattering when all is said and done. Jim

Hi Jim, I did but only after my family pointed it out to me. How sweet of you to pick up on that and mention it. I thank you so very much for reading the story, for my "Why I Write", for being so thoughtful in your review and gracious six stars. I appreciated your kind words for my mom as well. You are so appreciated my very dear friend.

I have been told I couldn't write, don't quit your day job and it was really good, you couldn't have written that. I was told that any reation to your writing is a good thing. But in all honesty some reations hurt. What we write is a part of us. People say good things we feel happy. But an ugly uncaring remark really hurts. Your essay was wonderful. Took guts to leave school grounds. Bravo. Glad you got an apology. Gretchen

Being a former teacher and a parent, I could really relate to your other in this essay. You relate what happened that day clearly and vividly and it's easy to understand your mother's influence. Thanks for sharing this. It brings back memories of when I taught my daughter one year. Rod

Aw, Debs, I could feel the pain you suffered, and I was right there with your mother when she put that awful teacher right. Sometimes teachers do things that are wrong, very wrong, and when something like this happens to a child it stays with them. I'm glad you still write, and your mum must be very proud of you. Love and hugs, Sandra xx

--I had worked hard all weekend on my poem and wouldn't even let my parents read it.

--If you love what you're doing and give it your best
Then ignore all the bad and keep all the rest
Hi Debi, nothing makes a child feel more loved than when a parent fights for their child and makes a wrong turn right. I enjoyed reading your story. I could feel the woe within you, the child. Of special note:

--My mother was gentle spirit with the kindest heart, but could be a fierce mama bear when needed.

(This reminds me of something that Roy said about his own mother--she might be little but she is mighty--paraphrasing. Lol. I'm sure both of you are correct.)

--However, our house burned down during my sixth-grade year, and we lost it.

(You and Rachel Rae. She lost all her journals, cooking recipes, etc. when her house in Lake George, NY burned down. How sad for both of you.)

-- when someone tells me they can relate to what I have written.

(When someone relates to your writing, you've done your job. By the way, your Mother is looking down and she is very proud of you.)

Debi, your story was beautifully illustrated, and it made me smile.
Keep on writing. Your writing brings joy to the world. Once again, stellar artwork by Kenzie. Well done. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. Xo. M

My dear sotu, I thank you so very much for your kind comments for my ʼWhy I Writeʼ story and for your very thoughtful review. Your kind words are always so appreciated. Thankfully my motherʼs book of poetry had other copies out so was able to The only thing greater than writing here is finding you. And also others like Karenina. Also thank you also for the generous gift of six stars and comments for Kenzieʼs artwork. Thanks again dear SOTU!!!

Terrific story that all the folks who have teacher parents know. My kids were in a small school with their mother as their English teacher. Their A+s were often frowned on since few of the other students could appreciate the intense writing and reading requirements of the class. My daughter was the salutatorian of her class and had a free ride through the University of Michigan. My son now teaches at his alma mater.
So glad your mom stood up that teacher in a timely manner.

Thank you Bill. I understand way too well as then my mother went into the big school the same time we did, and it was almost like people were waiting for you to screw up. Regarding your kids, I sure hope that those who frowned on their deserved A's were around to see what they had done for themselves post high school. There had to be some satisfaction for just a little rubbing their noses in them thinking that it was because they were her own kids.
I have found that when my mom would have to teach some of our classes later on, that she was actually harder on us then the other kids, just to prove a point, so I really feel for you guys too. But how awesome to have them turn out so great. You should be proud of your wife as well as the kids. Awesome. Pretty sure you had a hand in them being brought up so well too, so congrats Bill.
Thanks my dear friend for your wonderful review, generous six stars and kind words for my story as well. I appreciate it so much, my dear friend.

Thank you for sharing this beautifully written contest entry with us. I touched my heart. I enjoyed reading and good luck with the contest, but I doubt you'll need it.

Then one of the boys in the next grade said, "you didn't write that. Your mother did just like she does all your homework for you." (capital 'y' on 'you')

She held me tightly and said, "oh sweetheart, your poem is wonderful." (capital 'o' on 'oh')
