Your well deserved rant brings to my mind several issues:
1. Some people own dogs as a measure of prestige
2. Some get dogs for their children who either get bored with the dog after awhile and leave the disinterested parent to care for it.
3. Some people are just cruel to anyone or anything that is not able to retaliate for harsh treatment.
There are many more reason I could list, but this is enough for now. This points out the need for spay and neuter policies.

Thank you Nomi! You are so right about each of those. And I also think that people should have to apply for the privilege of owning a pet and undergo compulsory training.
    I appreciate your review.

Hi Wendy,
I know how hard it is to hear about something like this and know that it could happen again at an owner's whim.
I might have pointed out that he should have had the dog on a leash, that if he had, the dog wouldn't have been able to take off into the street. (maybe you can drop one into his mailbox) ;)
A year or so before I moved, I got new neighbors... city people. I've always been a cat person, as they largely take care of themselves. These people didn't like that mine went outside, I didn't even know they had any. Apparently, they had 4, DECLAWED! I was horrified!!!! Poor things can only dream of the outdoors. If you care that much about your furniture, don't get a cat.
Loved your rant...
Susan :)

Thank you Susan and you are right. He disappeared very quickly, but if I see him again I will say that. Sunny has a retractable lead so I can lock it at any diatnce from 1 metre to 5 metres. When he needs to be close, it's short, but out in the park or big areas he can run and prance on a 5 metre radius. Your story about the cats is HORRIFIC. That is shameful to declaw a cat. I've never heard of that before!

So many p[eople buy this cute little puppy, and then it grows into a Great Dane. He ends up chained in a fenced yard, barely noticed. What a wonderfully written rant. I wish I had a six for you.

Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day, and God bless.

Your rant is a good one that many people will be able to identify with. I love animals and it breaks my heart to know so many of them must suffer at the hands of irresponsible pet owners. My legs are no longer able to walk long enough to provide for the needs of a dog. The last one I had was free to roam on our nineteen acres and he never left the yard. He slept inside at night and got a lot of love and attention. As much as I'd love to have another dog, I'm afraid I might not be able to meet his needs so I meet my own needs to interact with animals by petting my childrens dogs.

Thank you for your review - which shows exactly how thoughtful and caring you are! You are considerate of a dog's well-being and value that. I appreciate your review very much.

Thank you for sharing this, Wendy dear. Dogs do need attention and care just like humans and regardless of size. My toy poodle needed frequent baths and paw inspections. Sending you my very best, Sal XOs

Thank you very much Sal. I am starting to feel that people should have to apply for the privilege of owning a pet and undergo compulsory training.

This is an excellent rant with information to back it up. I must admit my dog rarely gets walked, but she is somewhat crippled and only walks two houses in either direction even when we try to get her to go further. She does get a lot of love and talking to. Your neighbor's treatment of his dog would have me calling animal protection.

Thank you Carol for your lovely review - and also for the beautiful six stars, which I always value. You are showing understanding, and love and care for your dog by not making her walk when it is painful for her to do so. She is listening to her body, and a tiny bit of gentle exercise is enough. Your love and talking with her are what she needs most, and she is blessed to have a loving owner.

Well said, and I hope it doesn't make anyone feel better. Like you, I am a dog spoiler (currently ruining an 8 month old Newfoundland). I neverthink we do enough for abused animals. Your piece is compelling.

Thank you very much Nicki. I hope it will stir people enough to look after their pets with love and care, and maybe prompt them to speak up against people who treat their dog just like a "thing". I appreciate your review. And best wishes for you and your beautiful dog.

I am glad you feel better. But I do know where you are coming from when you mention that dogs need unconditional love. I had a neighbor who never took her dog outside. If she did, it was not very often. So where did her dog go for its bathroom duties, sunshine (vitamin D), pet attention, or experience unconditional love?

Thank you Rosemary. There are so many similar cases. It's so unfair on dogs, who are not able to experience the joys of being a dog. They're not just teddy bears.

I totally agree, some people should not be allowed to own pets of any description, especially dogs as they do need their owners to a least exercise them, a wonderful read and an excellent message, very well written, best wishes for your contest****kahpot

Thank you very much Kahpot. I appreciate your thoughtful words and good wishes. I do think it should be necessary to do some training, be checked out etc, and then apply for the privilege of owning a pet.

What an appropriate ending to this writing for our beloved four legged friend, the dog- and the events narrated make it all so real as our canines simply demonstrate to us in their own special way their sentient being needs ! Well done!

Thank you very much Zanya. Dog ownership is a privilege and people should have to apply and be trained and educated about the asociated responsibilities.
