Well-written. I wonder if the people in the house behind you took on the German Shepherd at a time in their lives when they were better-equipped to handle him. Perhaps it might be too difficult for them to walk him. Maybe they have arthritis or something.

I do wish some dog-owners were more responsible, and also that dogs were never allowed to be loose on public footpaths. It can ruin a walk on the hills if you've got an excitable dog running up to you unexpectedly, especially if you're not keen on them.

Thank you, Sarah. Thoughtful review, and much appreciated. No, they are both young and very fit, and apparently wanted a guard dog, so they don't mind if he's not too friendly. He alternates between whining, howling and growling, or else barking. I see another German Shepherd while walking. She is very obedient to her owners who must be in their eighties, and she walks, sits, and lies down on command. They walk her every day!
I think these neighbours think it's sufficient just to give food and water, sadly.

Your rant brought a tear to
My eyes thinking about these poor neglected dogs and Bobby being abused. I probably would have called the animal control officer on him after witness ing that. Good luck in the contest.

You have written a good story. The content is so true, and many people who claim to love dogs are impatient and have less tolerance of taking care of them, like people who love children until they become teenagers. Wishing you the best in the contest.

Wendy, I don't understand why anybody would ever hurt a dog or any animal that is deemed a pet. Your rant is full of pathos and logic and I would hope it could get a larger audience and change behaviors. Thank you for writing this. Terry.

They justify their bad behaviour in all sorts of ways. Tom would have said he was teaching Bobby not to run across the road. That?s not training him to understand or obey. Such actions sicken me. Thank you for your kind and understanding review.

It upsets me too. I live in the country with my dog and six cats. There are neighbors up the road who pay no attention to their dogs. Two of the dogs run up and down the road, then go past my home to a busy road north of our place. Animal control has picked up their animals a couple of times, but they get them back and continue to ignore them and let them run the roads. My dog has never left the yard, and I'm sure she doesn't want to; she is happy here because she has always been loved and cared for. I hope you win the contest.

People are so uncaring and unfair towards vulnerable animals. Thank you so very much for your lovely review, very understanding - and also for your good wishes.

Knowing how much you love and care for your dogs, I can understand how seeing other dogs treated badly would distress you. That first example you gave was not the dog's fault, obviously, he had not been properly trained to obey. a person who would treat animals that way should not be allowed to have them.

Hi Wendy, I can understand why you feel upset. The least you can do is to take your dog out for a walk, and be kind to it should be a natural thing. I wish you all the best in the contest. Ulla:)))

Thank you Ulla. I wish they would insist on some sort of application process for pet ownership, along with compulsory training. Thanks too for your good wishes.

This was a hard read for me. I hate people who abuse animals! So many wretched examples here. I can see the judging committee dissolving into tears. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. A lovely review. I still get upset thinking about what I wrote, and yet these people don't think they are doing anything wrong (punished him so he won't run on the road again!) etc. I couldn't bear to give examples of harsher abuse where Animal Welfare gets involved, as that's too upsetting. People should have to apply for the privilege of owning a pet and undergo compulsory training.
Thanks too for the good wishes.

Hi Wendy, this is right on the money! As dog owners, we are responsible for caring for them, as you state in your piece. I don't understand the people who own animals and mistreat them after the novelty disappears. This is a great rant!! Bravo!!

Oh! If I'd have been there when Tom hurting Bobby, I would either have reported him, or gone up and given him a piece of my mind! I hate that! And the poor lonely dog at the back of your home, all the stories you've mentioned here, makes me so mad! What are these people? They certainly should not be allowed to have an animal in their care. Wendy, this is the first rant I've read that has made me so angry! I stand with you on this, 100%! Why are some people so cruel? Well done for bringing up this rant, and good luck in the contest! :)) Sandra
