Thank you so very much for this poem and allowing me too ride with you down memory lane. You and I are very close in age I was born in October 1954. I have some of the same memories. That transistor in bed was a big one as was the "motor" on my bike.
Probably the biggest disappointment I ever had in my mother was when she promised me that when I turned eight I could cross Smith Avenue to go play baseball at the fire station, and then on my birthday she couldn't remember the promise. (I didn't get to go.)
You might want to edit for the change in tenses.
Baseball (was) a mechanism to unite families and (creates) conversations about statistics, box scores, favorite teams, players and standings. It (is) the only hug between father and son during his teenage years because their team just clinched the pennant. When the topic (came) up

Moms have a tendency to forget certain things. Or they say those things to shut us up!
Thank you for the tense corrections. I?ll take care of that!
I appreciate your time!

Sorry to take so long to respond to your reaction to my review. Life conflicts have been keeping me off of FanStory. You are most welcome for my review of your work.

A great introduction to your memoir. I like the manner of your presentation of the sport and what it meant to you and some of its contributors to the game. Finally, you ending baseball gave you and your son. GOOD STORY AND EXCELLENT WRITING.

You conjure up a lot of old memories of my own. Baseball did use to be an after-school and summertime activity. I was always in a church or neighborhood little league team - always. I was never any good but I sure had a lot of fun.
Thanks for the memories. Very well put!

Having fun is what it is all about! Sounds like a cliche but it?s so true.
Thank you Gary for reading, sharing and those six stars!
I do appreciate it. John

Hello jmdg,
I liked your story, but I couldn't relate, as I was never a fan of sports. I got hooked on fishing at an early age, and spent my summers at a local pond. When I got older I rode my bike to more daring and dangerous places in search of my quarry. As an adult, I found watching a major league game was somehow relaxing. I love the sound of the crowd in the backround and it just seems so much more civilized than the other popular sports. Well done on your story. Have a blessed evening.

What a great story. I love the part with the baseball cards in the spokes of your bicycle wheels. We used to put them on with old wooden clothes pins. A super nostalgic and meaningful piece not only to you as a child but also into your adult years and your children's adult years. Beautifully done! Best, JohnC

So well done. This story is well written, and conveys the writer's message in an evocative word picture. The choice of language is apt and effective. Keep on writing.

I enjoyed reading your memories of baseball and the times when you taught your son how to play. When I was growing up, I spent many days at the school baseball stadium rooting for the boys. As a girl, I played soft ball at recess, and my daughter played on a team later. As far as spectator sports, I prefer baseball over football, or basketball, and this time of year has good memories for me.

-A good image and story to go with it, John.
-You capture the spirit of baseball very well
from spring training, your early days, and
then passing the love of the game to your son.
-It is exciting when the teams have done what
they can to improve their teams, and in the
modern era, we are now changing the game
to try and make it more like it used to be.
-In our house we laugh about using the baseball
cards in the spokes of our bikes. Of course our
children have no idea what we're talking about.
-I can also relate to your "new perspective" when
your son came along and also enjoyed the game.
-It is a wonderful experience to share with our children.
-Here's to Spring Training and a new season with
high hopes for our teams!!!!!
-Thanks for sharing it.

This is a well-written story about your favorite sport. You were so fortunate that your boys loved it as much as you. Our youngest boy dreamed of being a Cub. When he sat on the bench his 9th grade year, I wanted to believe it wasn't because he was the only black kid to get on the team. He was an excellent batter and outfielder. That kind of spoiled it for me.
