Dr. Martin Luther King's place in the world as a leading force in the world of social justice and civil rights, for everyone, is well established and undisputed.

To denounce either Jesus or Doctor King, was to risk being labeled not only a disloyal coward, but also to indicate approval of the currently opposed conditions.

- This was true for some. The people of with me or against me. But not to all, those who understand nuance.

I do believe however, the vision he saw, may have been the election of, and successful two term administration of America's first and only black president, Barack Obama, so far.

At the end of his second term, President Obama's replacement was so odious and plainly unqualified, the stench of his failure will no doubt be a stain on our national honor for years to come.

- I think you were on pretty solid ground until the end, when you add a 'certain personal' political stance to cloud this piece. It wasn't needed, but you will get praise, just for those lines from people with deep political views (true or not), and that will take away from the theme of your post. Like Will Smith's slap, took away from historic wins at the Oscars. But that is your choice as the author.

You are right of course. It was not my initial intention. I, to my regret, allowed my personal feelings to taint what was meant as a historic tribute.

Hi Nomi,
I find it so horrifying that today, as well as then, people who had been so persecuted would be the ones to persecute.
You would think that people who had suffered things like the Holocaust wouldn't be so hateful of a group of people because of their ethnicity. You would think they would know how it feels. The same is true of people today. You would think that African Americans wouldn't be so quick to align themselves with the KKK, but for some reason there are those that do... then it seems to be one group against the other out there. Does it make you want to say, "I'm a little bit of everything." or "I'm nothing." If you belong to no group, you can't be hated for anything, can you?
Sad, that something comes down to the color of your skin, instead of the content of your character in 2023. What have we been fighting for all these years?
Susan :)

People are confused by purpose. A confused people are easy to fool and fleece. If I have you watching him and him watching you, neither will notice my hand in their pocket.

Martin Luther King, Junior was a brave man and a worthy subject of all the tribute he receives. I liked your essay about how King's activism and beliefs helped to give out nation the two-term Barack Obama presidency. I admire Obama as a president and a man more than I can say. Your essay was a fitting tribute to both men and I applaud you for it. You did a good job of making your case; but I am the choir, so I have no foundation for disagreement. Too bad not every president can be the quality of these two men, but it is something for voters to aim at.

Brilliant piece Nomi. Looking at your last sentence, the Trump years and what followed since he infected and incited more racial divisions that gave rise to white supremacists. Again when protest marches are held against racism and brutality in some circles, the critics this time think that they protest too much or are, in their own way, "racists" themselves.
So it continues.
Well done Nomi

Mary

I get the feeling you don't like Trump, with good reason. Dr. King was a fantastic leader of his people, and many white folks like me. His death was a terrible tragedy, and it is so sad a violent person raised right in my area was the one who killed him. Fortunately his dream didn't die, but there are a lot of people trying to pervert his message. Thank you for this fine article.

Thank you for being a good and kind hearted individual. I treasure your comments. Until we learn to live like we are part of the family known as man, we will be alien outsiders, hoping to find a way inside the loving arms of those who have already learned how to live in peace.

-Thanks for sharing the photo, notes, and story, nomi.
-It is a nice idea to write based on your friend's reading.
-Interesting, but not unexpected, that white ministers would criticize the timing of his activities. Even he had agreed, no doubt they would still complain.
-You follow that well with the passage from the Bible.
-You do a good job showing the challenges in either identifying or denouncing what Dr. King was doing.
-A very good paragraph about how his vision may have led to the election of our "first and only black president so far."
-You make a very good point at the end, as well.

Hi, nomi! I always enjoy these articles and am consistently learning about black history. It interests me to know and absorb the collaborative writings and documented events. This piece is a stark reminder of the blatent disregard for our constitution and a resouding reminder that "All men are created equal in the eyes of God! Best, JohnC

Therein lies the answer to the problem that all who profess a belief in concepts put forward in scriptures. Even if you only believe that Jesus was a good man and not the son of God. You cannot avoid the things he taught about God. Among those things was the insistence that you must love your fellow man as yourself. This makes racial prejudice verboten (forbidden). So even if you believe in God but are not a Christian, you still must treat every human with love and not hatred.
