This story reminded me of a story I saw on the news this morning about an 11-year-old boy who is autistic and has the gift of music. Can play the piano just by listening to something, whether it be classical, jazz, pop, whatever. Anyway, there was an older man who heard about it and apparently, took his retirement fund and purchased a baby grand for the family. He had it delivered to them, and it takes up most of their living room, but you've never seen that kid so happy! His parents are just ecstatic. You should hear that kid play... he's amazing!
A nice poem about the kind of love we never think about... the everyday silent kind.

Yes. Agreed. Having been raised in the South growing up in the country (as the rural area is commonly referred to) I can identify with many expressions. We had three gardens and seven kids to pick the vegetables. Experiences like that do develop character in kids providing them with work ethics that are valuable in life. I never referred to leftovers as "used food" but now I have a new expression to use. :)

Hi Eugene, That was a picture from my window to my front yard during one of our December, 2022 blizzards. Weird how that set the tone for our new year. We received -40 temps with -75 degree windchills, 20 plus feet of snow per blizzard, and all a month earlier this Winter. We haven't received any horrible weather yet this year. LOL, depending on what you call horrible.
And our Summers can typically go through at least twenty, 100 plus degree days. I remember one of our most enjoyable fourth of July's with our children, because we, (Glen and myself) sat under a shade tree and allowed them to mist us with cool water and us them. Which obviously involved much laughter. The luxury of Central air didn't come with the laughter, just cool air. So I wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

This is very relatable to some but yet many may never know the DIY lifestyle and hard work. It is unfortunate in some ways because that is how you learn and grow. I like that you presented a poem at the beginning that emphasized on the struggles of working class America.

Some generations and cultures are less vocal than others about love, but hopefully we all learn from the words and actions of love around us. Of love's austere and lonely offices" I think it did mean that Hayden realized his father's love was shown in the way he acted toward his family, not in words. Actions do speak louder than words, and while voicing love is very important, backing those words up with actions is also important. Some generations and cultures are less vocal than others about love, but hopefully we all learn from the words and actions of love around us. I appreciate this reminder to speak God's love and familial love into our children. I appreciate that you shared from your own experience with detailed examples of your own family life.

Ahh, Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All." I adore her, and this song is one of my favorites of hers. Your comparisons of interpretation to Robert Hayden's work were a brilliant way to present this in a non-fiction format. Ahh, Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All." I adore her, and this song is one of my favorites of hers. Your comparisons of interpretation to Robert Hayden's work were a brilliant way to present this in a non-fiction format.
