I like how this poem started with the innocence of a baby. Then seemed to have the questions raised about how family is sometimes viewed as a punishment. Naive thinking that the grass is greener elsewhere. Then once the meaning of family finally is understood, we take pride in our heritage. Great poem. Gretchen

Apt advice creatively couched in this deceptively jaunty rhyme--point taken as to unjustifiably casting blame--perfect punchline pounds your points home.

Thanks, Elizabeth. I glad you liked my rhyme. It didn't get any exposure before the contest. FanStory didn't feature it at all after it had enough reviews to go on the welcome page.

I enjoyed this family poem very much. I liked how you covered all the things that make our families unique, and I especially appreciated that you mentioned "perfect is not an option." A great point! It was a cute, amusing, well-written and quite enjoyable poem. Best of luck in the contest.

Soooooooo true! We don't get to pick them...(although sometimes, through adoption they pick us)---and yet every single thing we learn comes to us through the tone, love, example, and behaviors of those in our family circle!

We all (well most of us) go through that weird adolescent time when we want to make everyone believe we live alone in that house on the hill, or in that hi-rise apartment, or perhaps in that vine-covered hut in the woods. (smile)--

Eventually, as the saying goes, the older we get the wiser our parents seem! (Funny how that happens!)

I smiled my way through this. It's a feel good poem from beginning to end!

Thank you, Karenina. I'm glad you like my poem. It's true adoptive parents seem more like family that those whose DNA we share. There are all kinds families my poem didn't mention like the one many of feel like we have here among FanStory friends. I apprecate all your comments.

Oh! Well I thought you gently included all sorts of families in your very nice poem. It was your lines:

"Some days we?d like to run away
    and dream about adoption..."

That made me think of families who've come together by circumstance or choice...

I agree, the Fanstorian Family is yet another example.

A family we choose for ourselves!

This is a great poem about family. Nicely done with the flow of your words, and rhyming pattern. Your poem is smoothly metered and sends a good message about family. It is a very nice description as to what a family can be. It is sad that many kids today are brought up in some situations where family does not exist very well, or does not care. I especially liked your line, it wasn't like we had a choice, it must have been God's plan. I believe that it is his plan. Your poem about family is spot on, no family is perfect. Thank you for sharing.

How come I keep finding posts that should have come into my PM box? I'm happy I found this but still, it should have come into my box.

Thank you for sharing this writing prompt entry with us about families. Yes, we are stuck with our family. LOL, Yes, they mold as to who we become today. I enjoyed reading.

Thank you for the nice review and comments. You didn't get it because I entered it in a blind contest. FanStory didn't even show it for a couple of hours when it reached five reviews. It didn't any exposure because not many read it.

Hi Beth,
This poem is smoothly metered and tells us how lucky we are to be born into loving families. Yes, no family is perfect because no one is perfect. We must be able to forgive mistakes.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Good luck in the contest.
Joan

This is a very nice rhyming poem on the subject of the family for this contest. Good luck. Your last stanza is a wonderful thought about how we got to be who we are, and our responsibility to honor those who did it. Excellent work. Terry.

A very nice description of what a family can be. It is sad that many kids are brought up in situations where family does not exist or does not care. I have sometimes promoted the idea that a couple should have to pass an exam to get a license before they had children.

Thank you, Paul. Yes, it very true that many children grow up in such families. Your idea of passing a test in order to procreate might well prevent suffering among the young, but can you imagine all the blowback about government interfearance in our lives?
