Wow. I usually balk at anyone attempting to respond to a famous poem by writing another poem, but this is extremely well done and indeed, compliments it, IMO.
By the way, "In Flanders Fields" is an all-time favorite poem of mine. Good luck in the contest!

Thanks, Dawn. That poem is also one of my favorites. For some reason, those words came to me, and I wrote the poem 15 or 20 minutes.

Very much my pleasure, and I am quite sure the words were inspired.

Why can't we seem to keep normal hours?

Hahaha. I don't know why YOU can't... (*grin*)

Wonderful poem and beautifully written. We've lost that generation, but they still seem close with all the writing and poetry that keeps them in our memory. Thank you - made me think of my grandfather.

Thanks for the review, Chris. My grandfather was over there, too.

I enjoyed your version of the original poem here as it is well metered and rhymed and retains the same sentiment, I have never visited and maybe one day I will make the trip, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Thanks, Christine. There are a number of military cemeteries and war memorials in Europe that deserve a visit.

You have done a nice job of weaving the poem's original message with an updated message of remembrance. I hope that someday you might indeed go to Belgium and offer your respects for their efforts. Good job. Terry.

Thanks, Terry. My grandfather fought in that area. He was in the artillery and also served as a French interpreter.

Wonderful writing. I attended Flanders Fields on the 100th Anniversary of the ANZACs. It was a very emotional experience. Beautifully expressed story. A really enjoyable read.

Thanks, Jacqueline. This poem came to me in a flash as I was thinking about the war in Ukraine.

Well stated and honorable. I often think of my brother who served in the Vietnam War and listening to his tales of woe find it remarkable that he is still above ground. A clean and truthful writing. Thanks.

What a beautifully moving poem! THis poem flows with such smoothness and all the descriptions from crosses, larks singing, peace , no more guns, the sunset's glow and the field of poppies ...everything is such masterfully and carefully selected. This is such a noteworthy offering and a wonderful tribute in their memory.

Great job with your version of "Flanders Fields" and I like the addition of time and the universality of your poem. It's good to use that famous poem as a launching point. Best wishes in the contest.
Not sure why this is in prose format as this is clearly a poem.

Thanks, Helen. I was having a senior moment. When I saw the prompt, I didn't notice that it called for a story.

This is a beautiful poem for the "In Their Memory" contest. I love the poem, "In Flanders Fields" and I like how you have modeled yours after it, still paying a great tribute to those who gave their all.
