I've always believed that our minds protect our bodies and mental health in ways we don't understand, and maybe this is your mind's way of helping you to cope during these rough times (although I'm sure you'd like to have a quiet's night sleep). But who knows what it would be like to have silence instead of music - would it be worse - would you focus on physical pain and discomfort?

Do you get to request a song, or do you have no say in what the jukebox plays next?

Lucky us to read of this issue for you through a lovely poem. The more I'm around other writers, the more I understand their needs and appreciate how they communicate with the rest of us.

Take care, Debi!

That makes perfect sense Pam. I actually am ok now that I know it isn't dangerous or I am not going crazy. Wish I wouldn't't have waited so long to tell, because it horrified me wondering where it was coming from. Lol, it only plays what it wants. I can't make it stop or change it. However, I am thankful it isn't a construction site. Thanks my twin for the cute review.. Lol, does it take requests? Haha!

Don't worry! You are just one of the thousands, including me, that hear music while they are performing their daily routines, and in their dreams at night. Sometimes I am in the middle of a dream when I realize that a certain song has been playing, all the way through the dream!
So you may categorize this as a gift or a curse, or both.
I consider it a gift, sometimes I hear melodies I have never heard anywhere else.

Thanks Irish for the awesome comments. I do have daytime songs in my head or times that I think I hear something that isn't there, but this music in the night only happens when there is complete silence. And now that I know that it isn't anything to fear, I don't mind them at all. They are crystal clear and you can never tell they are coming from your head, since they sound like a speaker from the wall. However I don't get them when sleeping because I am always wide awake. And still can't figure out why it plays songs that I wouldn't think of in a million years. Strange, huh? But what you have sounds the closest of any I have heard of so far. Thanks for the great review and comments my friend! Lol, shrink appointment canceled!

Even before reading your notes, I was going to say, sounds like tinnitus to me. I am always thinking I'm hear my phone. When I had a torn eardrum, my doctor said I might hear radio stations. I used to think my neighbors across the road had their tv awfully loud. Well no one up here has a tv or radio going loud enough for me hear it. I've decided to not try to hear what music is playing or what the announcer is saying. That would be too schitzy. There is a tragic fb pace called tinnitus sufferers. Some want to kill themselves. I can't go on it often, because focusing on it makes it louder. I have real music going on most of the time. It drowns out some ( operative word) of the humming, thumping, kitty bells, whooshing, etc. I'm sad to hear you have it too.

Hi Liz. Yours sounds close to what I have. Oh I get the thinking the phone is ringing while I am in the shower or other things I hear. But my music that is only at night, is only music, no talking and strange that it is crystal clear but is music I would never think about listening to. Now that I no longer worry about what is causing it, I just hope it helped someone else. Yours does sound similar tho. I just wish I hadn't let it go for two years w/o telling anyone. I lost a lot of sleep that way, and I too thought about schizophrenia. Thanks for your awesome review and comments as it is nice to know I am not alone on some parts of it. Thanks again my dear friend!

I have certain sounds because of the way I have my head on the pillow. It is about jaws & neck & of course ears. I've learned there is no cure. My analogy is when we drive, we look through the scratches, dirt etc. If we tried to drive looking at the smudges, streaks, etc we wouldn't get very far. So listening & concentrating on our tinnitus is like driving focusing on noticing the windshield.

That makes sense. Something that I notice that may seem unbelievable is that I also can hear electricity. However that is also at night when I am not hearing the music and when I a m not hearing the other tinnitus noises. Stranger huh? People like you and I go through this notice things more so than most others. You also help me to realize how many different kinds of this there are..

This is funny. My first experience in the 70's due to TMJ was to notice an electric sound. I thought, "I hear electric wire sounds. It sounds like it's coming from that wall." Sure enough, there it was. So I checked the other wall...there too. Actually it was in my head.

I sometimes have a tune playing in my head that I can't get rid of, but it's not really their at my beckoning, although I don't necessarily like it either but it goes away. No, I don't have tinnitus. This is is beautifully written dear friend, an excellent, rhyming abab and an excellent post, well done, blessings Roy

Thanks Roy, and I know what you mean about not getting a tune out of your head. But this was actually music that seems to come out of my walls that was crystal clear and even worried about it being satanic at one point as there was no rhyme or reason to it. And why would it play, 'in the mood?'
I love the song,, but never thought about it. All is well now that I know what is going on. Just needed to share in case I could help someone else who was also dealing w this. Thanks my dear friend for the awesome comments!

When I was a teen I used to love listening to the Glenn Miller band. It's beautifully written. Exceptional work! No mistakes found in your poetry. Thank you for sharing! Good luck in the contest!

Oh Raul, that is so cool that you liked music that was way before both of our time. You are so kind and I thank you for the great comments and six stars. You are such an awesome friend!

You're welcome, Debi! Yeah, this is why I listened to smooth jazz musicians when I was a teen and I still listen to it.

Hello my SOTU, you like to keep things interesting. You and your BIL have something in common, Tinnitus. His is chronic. It sounds like yours is too. Do you take meds for it? As Steve is always playing a song, I would venture to say that he, too, has "Musical Tinnitus." At least you have an explanation for your condition, and you know that you are not going crazy. Of special note:

The songs don't seem to be in my head
It's like a speaker coming out of the walls

(That's a lot of music. It's almost like the "rocket's red blare." It must be very annoying and exhausting.)

Great artwork. Sorry that you are going through all of this. The nights must be so long and lone. Well done. Keep the blue waters flowing.

All is well now my sweet sotu, now that I know what it is. I really worried because it was every night, no request option, lol, so I had to hear what was playing. And it was crystal clear so it was spooky as long as I never shared it w anyone, The last thing I ever expected was that it was related to tinnitus. However they do think that most people w tinnitus don't have the musical type. Idk, maybe Steve's and mine are genetic since we are in-laws.. Hehehehehe! I even thought it could be satanic because for the life of me, why was it happening? So now that I know, I thought I best share in case I could help someone else. I do believe if we talked 24/7 for a month, we still wouldn't scratch the surface of what the weird stories we could tell.
Thanks for the awesome comments my dear, as I truly appreciate them.

Weird story. Steve and I were having breakfast and the toaster fell off the counter, yanking the cord at of the wall. Toaster is dented but still works! That was crazy. We were both sitting there.

That's simple. You have ghosts! LOL

Well if we have ghosts, we toasted him that day. No one gets to live for free in my house. Big-teeth smile. Xo. M

Gosh I miss you if I am forced to be without you for more than 12 hours in a day. You completely crack me up. What would I do without my sis????
reply by LateBloomer on 11-Nov-2022
I'm assuming that you know the "The Music of the Night" is a song from the Phantom of the Opera--so appropriate. Xo. M

Yes'm and I saw the broadway version twice. Actually that is why I picked that title for my poem. I checked out the YouTube video but it takes forever for them to get to the beautiful part of the song. So .....

I am sorry. Thank you for spreading the awareness about this problem. If I may ask - is it very intrusive? Can you for instance read a book or do a concehtration-required task without distractions?

I can work on my ipad as long as I am not writing a poem where I need quiet. Lots of people think it is like when you get a song in your head and can't get it out. That happens to everyone and isn't at all like it. But now the worse part about it is that I don''t always like the song. And it will keep playing all night long. The only way you could get rid of it is to do something noisy, but doubt my husband would appreciate it. No it is fine now that I known that it isn't some kind of mental illness. I just hope more people don't go through a cou[le years of it and not get it out in the open. The worst part was I also worried about if satan was trying to possess me. I just had no idea. Should have never waited 2 years to tell someone. ...Thanks Sweetie for your very kind review and words. I do appreciate it so much!

Thank you for sharing this writing prompt with us. I don't hear music at night but while I was working, before I retired, I would eat breakfast by myself and while my refrigerator's motor was running, I would hear music. I thought I was going crazy. I was the only person up in the house. It was spooky. It doesn't happen any more.

Hi Barb. I think what that is classified as, is a phantom sound. Kind of like being in the shower and you think you hear the phone. The sounds that I hear all night are music but they are crystal clear and it has to be quiet in order to hear them. Weird, huh? Thanks and I know what you are talking about and those are often heard with other sounds. Both spooky tho. Thanks for the awesome comments my sweet friend.
