There are monsters among us... What, I wonder, does it do to a child when the monster is her father?

When rage is normal, what is love? A brief respite from fear? How do we learn to value what our parent devalued?

Scars heal. The wounds are oh so deep, though.

"Tears swallowed on that fatal day and every day since..."

You write for every abused and neglected child.

They, too, can thrive...

Karenina

I like your verse- excellent catharsis- bringing emotions into the light - allowing them to speak in written words- observing them as you re- read the message flowing from the inner child's recollections- noticing the angry words - key- focused - core - the ones to eventually be released- not your inner child's fault- forgiving the inner child- setting her free- releasing the the hot coal - projected on an evil event- cry- feel- pray for your father - then release -
the hot coal and free your precious child- life is suffering - is what it is- change what we have control over- let go and let God- one battered child to another- I feel your pain- good work - AP. Hug

Thank you, AP, for your kind words of understanding. I knew we were kindred souls when we just started using the message system just to talk. Thanks for being who you are a survivor like me!

Sandra (do you go by Sandra?)...

This is great work; masterful and impressive. Kudos. Well done.

In the writing I've seen from you so far (just a small sampling), it is clear to me that you have mastered the ability to capture the essence of generational fear, hurt, anger, and pain. You express these powerful negative emotions so well; feelings that are repressed and simmering at a slow boil just under the surface; ready to explode at any moment like a powder keg with a short, lit fuse fueled by flames of abuse and neglect.

"After Fluffy's Death" captures the intensity of repressed fear and anger and traces it's ugly and destructive path from the abuser to the abused. "She ingested her pain" and "She digested her sorrow" were particularly strong lines and I especially liked your marching and smashing metaphor; from cockroach to kitten to child. These words that pack a powerful punch. Outstanding!

Lastly, I would be remiss not to vigorously applaud your final sequence (last five lines).

- As if nothing mattered.
- As if nothing happened.
- His retaliatory brutish anger
- found a new resting place
- in her.
In response, I have no words... (only silent accolades). Wow!

Jarring story. Haunting ambience. Powerful words. Heart-breaking despair. Deep emotional impact. Memorable work.

Thank you for sharing your writing with us, Sandra.

Blessings...

Curt (WRW)

Sandra is fine. You get to know me better and it will shorten to Sandy. LOL Thanks for this exceptional review. I hold dear the support of other writers. I am humbled by your kind words.

Seeing something like this, living with this kind of brutality, can only change the person that it happens to - in some way - for the rest of their life.

From a cockroach to a kitten to a child . . . this reminds me of serial killers, how it is said that they begin with animals and work their way up.

As his anger grew, his victim became more meaningful.

So well told, yet so terrible to read.

That's a sobering image and how you make us feel the destructive force as it crescendos from the "Smash" of the roach, the kitten, and ultimately the tenderhearted child. Every parent with a temper needs to take warning from your poem!

I went back and read "Fluffy" before I read this one. This was truly tragic and frightfully upsetting. Still, you wrote it very well. I like what you did to the fonts to emphasize certain words. Best wishes to you.
