Charles, I completely appreciate and love your kindness, but am a little concerned about your rating. I am truly trying to help you, but if you give a four star rating, then that means that there is something that you didn't like about it. And this piece has been getting some of the best reviews for me. I fear that you haven't written on here yet enough to know that we don't score a four if it's a really good piece. And by your comments, I would have to assumed that you did like it. I hope that are others too are trying to help you understand the system as well, because these scores make a difference in the rankings. Thank you my friend and I hope that you know that I am trying to help you gain the respect of your peers. Welcome my friend to FanStory.

Yes. Received another similar response. I thought 4 of 5 stars was a very good review. Apparently its not? I was saving the 5 stars for those poems that really move me. Your subject matter and the purpose of your poem was not of a type that would do that. I don't think you could improve your poem; it does what it was intended to do in clever and cute way. I'm also unclear as to what the rankings are all about. It makes me wonder if the writers on this site would be better served if we did away with the star ratings and simply candidly reviewed each others' work. But maybe the stars are needed to motivate?

I just copied this from guidelines. Hopefully this will help you. I know how it felt when I was new, and it helped me to feel accepted. The guidelines were put in place before most of us got here.
Writers are generally interested in improving their skills and impressing the audience. You, as a reader, should try to write an unbiased review of the work. You are encouraged to be helpful. Always state what you liked and did not like (state both). Compare the writing to the top authors you have read when making a judgement of how many stars to award.
The site offers a six star scale for ranking work. Here's a guideline:
Six Stars (Exceptional: Simply Outstanding)
Five Stars (Excellent: Enjoyable and no revisions needed)
Four Stars (Good: Adjustments needed)
Three Stars (Below average)
Two Stars (Below Average: Needs lots of work)
One Star (Poor: Major revision required)

What could be a better way to celebrate than with a rose, and a toast (champagne, anyone?) I like that you give specific reasons for singling out those writers. I only wish there was a way to write a little something for everyone. I am trying with the FS friends contest and hope that I eventually get to everyone. Thank you so much Carolyn for such a lovely review and such kind words for my poem about you and so many others here. Actually it was my husband who was just was in the hospital, with blood clots. He had just had his second hip done and I had my first leg done in July and now getting the other on Monday. We have had quite the Summer but continue to count my blessings as we are both still here. Thanks again my dear friend for always being so sweet!
