This is a powerful satire fiction piece including bold truthful statements about occurrences many readers and writers on THIS site have noticed. It's interesting that a creator of a contest with very detailed requirements could receive one vote and come in last in their own contest. It's happened. Btw, another writer on this site wrote a dialogue only fiction piece about this same subject, and included folks who use credit cards to promote their writing. You have adequately described Write-Off. I'm now going to look for FabStory.

It's possibly a bit mean to poke fun in satirical pieces but all those rules telling people what NOT to write irritate me.

This story, Truth with Some Fiction, offers a thinly veiled slam on some of the current "challenges" which seem to stem from the prompt creator's own submission as the winning example. Example:
Write a poem about someone named Mary who had a little animal which must not be an elephant, giraffe, opossum, earthworm, wombat, or mollusk of any description. The main character cannot own any farm animals which are not wool-bearing. Any movement within the verse must include public school, an instructor, and restrictions on domesticated bovine creatures in that before mentioned scholastic setting.
The only possible winner would be the creator's entry, if indeed, anyone read of voted for it.
Thanks for showing us the lunacy of this current trend.

    hahahahaha... yes indeed.
I'm upset - I SOOOO wanted to write about my gay, adopted wombat who utters profanities all the time while humping my leg.

I'm pleased to see and know why you are the writer that you are, Jenny. :) I on the other hand have a limited use of words. Yet, I love to read because I understand this line, "sometimes mediocre writing could achieve an 'All-time Impressed' rating, proving that vanity is a powerful motivator and money talks." How true. You use this satirical peice and discribed FanStory. Thank you for sharing

Sometimes goods things get swamped by the masses. People tend to destroy that which would do them good or give them pleasure. I like FanStory most of the time.

Lol! You have thinly disguised "truth with some fiction" in this interesting post which I thought was for the contest of the same name. I do think there are some similarities with reality because it's the wealthy who can hire the editors. It's the celebrities who get the publishing contracts. But we can enjoy getting to know each other and help each other pursue our writing goals.

Ouch. Again, ouch. I see your point, and I agree. I would never have had the courage to say any of that, so good for you. Thanks for sharing this here.

Sometimes you have to fire all cannons to clear the air. If winning a contest is one's only goal and they stack the deck in their favor then they miss what writing and review feedback is all about.
Reading a bad piece of writing just for its monetary value also defeats the purpose, admittedly, I just move on rather than give a review when others have praised it.
But what is wrong with a little ego as long as it does not dominate our thinking and writing?
I myself, rarely enter contests but that is because of the caliber of better writers, but I vote often looking for that jewel even if that writer only gets my one vote, and I will then pull it aside to write a review.
A very well thought out and necessary essay.
Best wishes,
Mary

This is a very interesting write Lisa, hosting a site for the public is not easy and words can turn toxic very quickly and ruin the site's reputation. Before Fanstory I published my work on another site called Forward Poetry. They had a forum and people would say terrible things about other poets. So many people joined in to bring down a poet who had talent and many were threatened by anyone who gained more points than they did. It was so awful and some were spiteful and cruel. The site eventually closed as people were opening false accounts in order to say unnecessarily bad things about others and there were a few ring leaders that caused trouble, you might call them trolls. I was sad to see the site close as I enjoyed posting my poetry, but I understand why they closed it because it turned into a slanging matches which steered the site away from the talent. Fortunately I have not seen this kind of behaviour on Fanstory, love Dolly x

Good job, LisaMay. This is certainly not the most beautiful post that you have ever submitted, but it is so insightful. Inciteful, too, if there is such a word. I stay on the periphery of FanStory, mostly just reading the writers that I enjoy and posting occasionally. There is so much more to FanStory though. Your post certainly picked up on the intricacies and eccentricities.Even professional psychologists would have a field day with the personalities and egos.
Well done.

Whatever you do be careful when biting your tongue that you do not write off part of your cheek as well. Lol.

Why do I believe write off to be alive and well, domiciled as ever in the Internet but existing under an assumed name?
