Hello Brett, your adoption story is heartwarming. I could feel the love and gratitude that you have for your Dad. God gave you the courage to run away from evil, and you found a new and wonderful life. You have been blessed. As for the biological parents that stayed in the shadows, they will have to reckon with that on Judgement Day. You've had an exciting life, you have been nurtured and love. By your story, I'm assuming that your Dad was not married? Just wondering. An impressive story. I usually only read poetry, but the adoption writing prompt pulled me in as my husband found three of his biological brothers via a DNA test through Ancestry.com. The three brothers had a wonderful meeting, and now they call, talk, and text each other on a regular basis. Brett, I'll have to check out your writing to get more details. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. LateBloomer

I found your story so moving that you found a dad with a big caring heart. I love the line that any man can be a father but not ever man can be a dad. Unfortunately, it is so true.
Best wishes
Mary

I thank you for telling such a stirring story. Your appreciation to the man s outstanding and I add thanks to him for eliminating one child from the street to assist him in becoming a man.

This is a beautiful story that is well-written and well-edited. There is nothing sweeter than adopting an older dog (or cat). The one thing I'm confused about, he was adopted at twelve and Dad died sixteen years ago, he's doing a lot more than approaching middle age. He's 28 years old. That seems rather old for our hero. Best wishes in the adoption contest.

Think you are a bit confused. These are comments about my adoption when I was 12. And, yes, my Dad died 16 years ago. I have always compared the fact nobody wanted me, until my Dad came along, to an unwanted dog.
    Appreciate the review.

I was very confused. The dog in the title threw me. actually, my husband and I adopted a 10-year-old, 2 nine- year- olds, and then a crew of 5, 3, 2 and 18 months. The last four were the children of the 10-year-old who never found herself.

Thank you for writing your story to show part of your fascinating life. Your last paragraph is very powerful and shows how bonds of love, gratitude, and respect don't need to be biological. Blood connections can be overrated.

    Blood connections?

If I ever had any none have ever stepped forward to claim this Unwanted Dog. So, blood relations mean a whole lot less than nothing to me.

    Much appreciate the review.

I didn't know your story and this makes we want to read more about it. I had no idea you grew up in the Nashville area. I enjoyed these thoughts about your adoption and how you came to be adopted. I assume you are writing about yourself and not someone else. You say it is biographical non-fiction but since autobiographical isn't designated it could be someone else's story.

It is mine all the way.

I wrote my autobiography a few years back when I first joined FanStory.

Called it Unwanted Dog. You know, like the dog in the shelter curled up in the far corner of their cage looking mournful because they know no matter what they do no one will ever adopt them.

Details how my Dad and I met up to him coming to remove me from Hermitage Hall.

Thanks for sharing this excellent story about your adoption Brett. I'll look for your autobiography to get the other details.

A few suggestions:

"I look back and could(n't) care less." - this is a common error, but if you think about it, could care less would mean you do care. :)

"These include(d) venues such as Tootsie' s Orchid Lounge, ..."

"...Walker,(.) I have had the pleasure of unforgettable memories with(.) All(all) acquaintances I treasure..."

"If I was half the Dad you didn't have to be then perhaps I accomplished something meaningful in my life." - If I were half the dad you chose to be, then..." - the sentence is a little awkward the way you've written it, and the proper grammar is "if I were" at least it used to be. :) Many things have changed.

I think you should include information on where to buy a copy of your book. Could I get it on Kindle? The adoption sounds as if it weren't meant to be. Your Dad sounds like a wonderful man that brought out the best in you. Is there a mother in the picture too?

How fortunate you were to be found by this wonderful man. You are right. Anyone can be a biological father, but it takes something special to be a dad. My youngest son adopted his oldest daughter when she was two. They are two peas in a pod.

Hi Brett, Thank you so much, for sharing your story with us, and for entering the competition I created. I'm so glad you did that. I just couldn't keep quiet anymore. There comes a point of no return and one has to speak up. I wish you the best of luck in the contest with the your well written biography. I will be posting mine in a short while. Ulla:)))
