I liked the way you've written this from your dad's POV Yvonne. And I know over here I feel we have turned into separate syates instead of one country. I think the same as you say, what would our parents generation think of todays world. Well told Yvonne, cheers

When I started to read this story of yours, I thought to myself, either my sister has had a face-lift and all the works, or she holds her age well!!!!! I dashed down to see it there was a hint, and then saw your author's notes!!! LOL! I'm just sorry I don't have a six left AGAIN. This is such a good story for the contest, you should do very well. And you're right about one thing, all those brave men who served in that war to keep our countries safe and free, would wonder what the hell is going on! Well done, my dearest SATP and good luck in the contest! :)) Sandra xxx (ps, and you do look very young!)

I'm sitting here with my tummy churning. I hate dentists and I'm a little bit (no, heck, I'm a great bit) nervous. I'll be leaving in an hour. Wish me luck!) xxxx Sandra

Wow. I think you captured the very essence of the ambiance around WWII -- this is exceptionally well written, and for me, a very pleasant walk down memory lane. I was not yet born, but born soon enough after to have heard much of the sentiment that you write here expressed.

Hello Yvonne.

There is very little resemblance between today in 1941 in America. The story of your father is tragic that he made it through World War II and dies on a street being hit by a car.

The current generation is socially and culturally illiterate. Couple that with politics and economics, that doesn't bode well for the future. The driver we have now doesn't have a notion of what to do.

Robert

It's so sad. I imagine there are a lot of veterans spinning in their graves. Thanks, Robert.

This story, My Time in WWII, creates a person's life within this timeframe. The world in battle, surviving shortages and fear, made a generation of Americans tougher.

Thank you, Bill. Times certainly have changed and so have attitudes. What a difference.

I was raised in a military family and I appreciate your service very much. It is horrible that so many people no longer respect their own country. It is even worse that hatred of it is being taught to our children. Old Glory is a special flag incredibly honored by so many who sacrificed everything they had to keep it flying. Thank you for sharing your story in the contest!

A small typo here: I was stationed in Abilene, Texas as (at) the time

Thanks for catching that. I have changed it. You know what it's like being in the military. I married a Navy diver back in 1965. It's a different life, for sure.

Someone had to stay back and train those recruits. Your dad was doing a vital job. I often thought we didn't spend enough time training the lads to shoot straight, aim off for wind etc.

It's all very well training them to use ground and creep along in the dark but it's all waisted if you dont shoot straight at the end.

An interesting and unusual war story.

Thank you. I didn't think this would get much notice. I really wrote it to fill up the contest so it would stop rolling over. lol. Thank you so much for those kind words. He taught me to shoot, too, and when I was young, I was almost another Annie Oakley. Truly. lol.

Loved the storytelling tone of this piece. Also, we forget how the civilians did their part during the wartime shortages. You brought all of this to light and it is such a sad thing that we are being so divided these days.

Suggestions:
Abilene, Texas as the time, (at the time?)

Ol' Glory will continue to fly high regardless of those that disrespect her, and expect something for nothing and keep the chaos going. You did a great job with your contest entry, Yvonne. I enjoyed reading about the time during the war though it was sad for those fighting it and for those waiting back home. You did a great job with the examples of how everyone untied behind a common cause--unlike today where it's me, me, me.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Yvonne,

I think it's so amazing to be born and to have lived at the time I have - to have seen all the changes I have. I agree that the folks of the Greatest Generation would have a lot to say. This was lovely! So realistic!

A note:
--> I was stationed in Abilene, Texas a(t) the time,
