Your writing is exquisite and rousing. You handled this subject with passion and objectivity. I think the inclusion of the MLK speech was an inspired choice to include in your summation of this stellar write. So well said, Sally!!!

This piece, A Nation of Character, is filled with important reminders that the United States stands alone as a beacon of hope and freedom for a world that is comparatively primitive.

Such an outstanding posting, Sally! My heart is with you and your voice on this racial issue. Do people not know that many of the past's slave traders were black? Do people not remember that thousands white soldiers died in the Civil War to free black slaves? Do people not realize that today's generations have NOTHING to do with supporting America's early slave activities? This, also, goes for the Native American Indian peoples of long ago. We, today, are not the ones that overran their land. Hatred is a learned thing...we are not born with it. What is amazing is that God, who loves both the perpetrators and the victims, is watching history play out--its atrocities occurring because we were created with free will. How amazing this world would be is the right to choose evil was overtaken by the right to choose good. Sincere best wishes in the contest! ð???ð???ð??? Janet

Sally,

I've always thought of you as a highly talented and gifted writer. But this piece just put you into a whole different classification. Oh, my stars. I am in awe. I could cry. This was amazing.

This is probably my favorite thing of yours ever. If you don't mind, I think I'll keep it. Brilliant. I'm only sorry I don't have any sixes left. And I'm dreadfully sorry they don't give us TWENTIES which is what you deserve!!! Thank you so much!

"Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."

As long as you are still singing these words, America will prevail and maintain its unequivocal dignity.
This essay is STERLING.

NB:
I do take exception to this...
Slavery still exists in several places throughout the world, and in Canada, but not in America. Did you know that?

The modern slavery theme that Walk Free is ... arbitrarily casting needs to be investigated before it is believed.

Canada does not condone slavery, Their words need to be proven.

Thank you for the lovely review and kind comments. Walk Free is a good group as far as I know. These statics, as most statics are, are five years old. It takes a while for stats to be brought forward and for counties to be forthcoming, especially with something like human rights crimes like slavery. My middle son was a missionary to China, and he said slavery does exist there, and the Christians are taxed extra and severly persecuted. Many simply disappear into the night. Michael left as his group had their bank accounts closed and the money confiscated by the Chinese government. Sending you my best,

Hey Sally, what a topic to write on, thanks for choosing to do so. I thought about it, but with the current social and political climate I knew I would get a lot of backlash. I would not have written so eloquently as you have if I had chose to write. My sentiments would've followed the tenor that yours did. So many today, live with an entitlement mentality and a pension toward blaming others for past sins. I love the fact that you indicated that each one is responsible for their own shame. You also alluded to the fact that our past and present should be judged with a cultural contextualization.
I am reading this on Saturday and my six star capability is long gone. But, now this if I had six, so would you. Thanks for sharing with courage and passion!
Embrace the love from above.

I couldn't review this until I thought about it. You have a lot of food for thought here.
As an American, I am proud! But, as you point out, hate is a poison that is spreading throughout our country. We live too much in the past and have to worry about what is happening here and now. The Capitol riots have truly hurt my soul and my heart. Not to condemn these men for the part they played in this fiasco is wrong. We must show them and the world that American is strong, unbiased, and true to its Anthem.
Thank you for this fantastic article you wrote. It wakes up our minds.
My best to you,
Marie

This was not only well written, but has a powerful meaning. I have grown tired of people in power and the media pushing hate and racism. They seemed to want to drive a wedge between groups. Divide and conquer. Having faith in God seems to becoming a bad thing.

My parents made faith an important part of our lives. Over my life I have seen what faith can accomplish. I thank God every day for the life he has given me. Like my parents my wife and I have raised our children to have a strong belief in God. Now they are passing that belief to their children.

The young are the hope for our country.

Hi there,

It's an intereting notion about where the US is going but before that folk need to realise where it is... and always has been.

hatred for one another based on color, which is the textbook definition of racism;- people say this a lot but it isn't. Colour is only one aspect of racism according to most definitions.

The big issue with using colour is that it ignores the fact that not all white people are the same race. My wife and I are both white (which is a colour) but are descended from different races. I descend from Celts and my wife from Picts. They all originated in different places (I'm Viking stock)

I think one of the biggest issues for the the US at present is that they are now seeing what many non-americans having been aware of for many decades.

The US is not, and has not been the bastion of all things good as it once thought. Its own history has always been self-serving and not altruistic as many of its denizens liked to believe.

in the current climate, those blinkers have been removed and now America itself can really see itself for the first time really.

It isn't really a question of where it's going as opposed to how it is and how it has been...

The whole God thing in the US baffles me. It isn't God's country. The Jewish folk REMAIN God's chosen people.
The US government was set up exactly to separate church & state having seen how many other countries managed to screw that up so badly.

their country's defeat in the Great War.- to be fair, not his country, just the one he was conscripted to fight for...

World War II... the power of one person's hatred! - I think this is somewhat hyperbolic. It can't be put down to one person's hatred...

Are we really going back there as nation? Have we learned nothing from our history? World history? - this, sadly, is true. People never learn from History

Slavery still exsists in several places throughout the world, and in Canada, but not in America. - that's simply not true - it does happen in the US. Sex trafficking is modern-day slavery. These things still exist, they just call it something else...

Onw of the biggest blockages in dealing with prejudice & bigotry is 'boxing'. We put things in a box and give it a label. This is slavery. This is bigotry, this is this. This is that. Different movements spring up and pick up that box... but only that box without realising that they are all actually interconnected and it would be more powerful to join and rise up saying 'All bigotry & prejudice is WRONG'. You can't right one and leave the rest. It doesn't work that way which is why it always fails...

Interesting piece
