A chilling scenario, and what makes it more so is the underlying fact that our actions as humans are creating a situation that isn't too different from the one you describe. How very slowly the tanker of political action begins to turn. One can only hope.

I never thought that, as a writer, my goal would be to make someone uncomfortable. But I think some times and topics should make us uncomfortable. I hate the adage, 'don't talk about religion or politics. What could be more important than the state of the world and the state of one's afterlife?
So... Glad you were uncomfortable! If you figure out how to get those old, rusty wheels of politics moving faster, let me know!

I found this well-written and very intriguing. The meteorite that was in the news recently might be what she saw, so maybe she should try to live. The dinos bit the dust but lots of other things survived when the meteor formed the Gulf of Mexico. In other words, I think this would be a great prologue to a book.

Wow, Carol... Thank you for that compliment! Not sure I'm that level of writer, but I do like the idea of a book...
I have a friend wo always says she wants to be the first one eatten by a zombie, under the first nuke, etc. She's not a great fighter.
But I think of the lives around me -- my ids, grandkids, students -- and I know I'd bust my gut to keep them alive. To do that, I'd survive.

Very interesting future. This woman lost all hope for a better or possible tomorrow, so at the last moment she decided to commit suicide and die in the world she knew. Well, it certainly is possible. Without hope there really isn't much need for life.

I appreciate your comments. I heard a quote (by ... someone) that said, "Man can live about 40 days without food, about 3 days without water, around eight minutes without air, but zero seconds without hope."
And I agree. And I love your line: Without hope, there really isn't much need for life.

well, personally, I think your story came from the constant bombardment of govt. mandates, telling people what they can and cannot do, where they can and cannot go, and it seems they plan for it to go on forever! Opposing medical opinions have been squelched and people being treated like brainless sheep who can't make intelligent choices for their own families. It is depressing as hell - along with the happy fact that the President has not only deserted the Afghans but his own people.

We are under a deluge, are we not, Katharine ! And, you know, I didn't even think about it, but I'd taken a break from watching morning news for a year (yep, that was MY pandemic relief) and started again recently. Interesting...
I agree with you, believe it or not. From y author notes, you probably half-expected an arguement. Nope. We have many failings as human beings. But I already have a Shepherd and do not need a president to tell me what to do. I have opinions, which I share with any who care to hear. I've looked at medical evidentce and spoken to my kids (medical professionals) and feel like the shot is a good idea. But I don't want to be banned from a restuarant because I make a different choice. I do'nt want my son (not the medical expert) to be banned from the next Olympics even though he's a national level athlete because he and I do not share the same opinion about a vaccine.
And the president... Oi! Yikes. Imagine how it feels in Afganestan right now. My brother-in-law, foster sons and son-in-law fought, lost friends and two were wounded so that it could fall apart in 11 days... Shameful. My other thought on that is that we as AMericans were perhaps too optimistic that the Afgan people would want political freedom as much as we wanted it for them...
Rant over! lol
