I feel this is a valuable piece of writing for all of us here at Fanstory. I agree with you on your points. The public is not dumb and I feel research is important. I especially like how you mention that fantasy stories need to be researched as well. Accepting criticism is another important point, criticism allows us to grow as writers. Excellent teaching essay.

Wow, thank you for this, G. It's the sort of piece I feel I should keep by my side for all submissions in future. I'm lucky in that my husband helps me and he has a sharp mind for rules and guidelines. He won't let me post anything before it's really ready! LOL. I learnt a lot by reading it and I'm sure I'll remember most of it and can check to see if I've missed anything in future. Thank you again for such a helpful piece of advice, Giddy

I enjoyed reading your article on writing and it gives us a lot of good advice. This line stood out to me: "Most importantly for writers is to read a few books on your subject or genre. I often hear writers say they haven't got time to read... nonsense. If you have time to write, you have time to read." Reading is what gives us incentive to write.

Some great writing tips, here, Gareth. I wish Tom had a way of archiving this kind of post so that people could find it easily and access it at point of need. Good of you to share your knowledge and experience. All the best, Tony.

You did a great job with your work on writing--do's and don'ts. I enjoyed reading it. You give readers some great advice that is supported by relevant facts that will help or kill a piece of writing. I like the way you formatted you lines--esp the bold sub headings.

In the sub heading Know the Rules Before You Break Them
it doesn't matter of ( if ) your early work . . .

Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

I enjoyed this write and found it held very good advice for us authors. Thank you for taking your time to write this. Even with these adhered to, many good writers do not get read-it seems much of what gains accolades are whatever is felt to be popular-

This is a terrific essay, the perfect example of what to end up with if you were to write one. It's clear, concise, well organized and wonderfully structured. There's lots of great advice here, none better than accepting criticism. Everyone today seems to think of themselves as the next John Grisham. I remember one person on here asking me to read her books but stating she didn't have time to read mine. This is part of the problem to me in a nutshell right there. The world of Amazon is full of stories and novels floating around in the ethernet that everyone writes, but nobody reads. And Barnes and Noble is full to the gunwhales with books on shelves collecting dust. estory

This was truly amazing and very helpful. Your article highlighted or rather addressed all the what I call, the important aspects of writing. These are important because the concept of each use is valued enough by you to show their importance. If you don't mind I will bookcase this. Great job and very much enjoyed.
