I like the viewpoint of this sea faring mane, being a sailor is hard work but he would do it all over again. You have a vivid use of words that captures well the image of life on the sea. You also have an almost musical flow of words.

Hello Yvonne,
Congratulations on the win!
A fun poem of adventure, wanderlust, truth and lies:
sounds much like life on land, as well as sea.
Your written the form beautifully with excellent linking rhymes
and seaworthy iambic pentameter.
"I'd do it all again" says it all. (but I'd prefer better cuisine)
Best wishes to all.
Robert

I loved reading this and am pleased for you that you won the contest. I can smell the salt in the air and the rhythm of the sea. You've portrayed the hardships really well, and the hankering to do it all again comes through with great nostalgia. The illustration is most appropriate.

This is a seamless and exceptional Lauranelle. As I read on the edge of my seat, I followed the rhyme scheme and was amazed at how well this flowed throughout. Rhymes such as "liars" and "desires" are great choices, and these are but two, of so many wonderful rhymes, in this piece. Thank you for writing such a marvelous poem. I wish you well in the contest.
Take care,
Jesse

To fall in love with the ocean is an easy thing to do. To choose it as a lifetime of struggle against the sea is a very difficult choice. I guess those who do are so infatuated by her beauty and can't loosen the grip she holds. Hardship is something they accept. Beautiful! Smiles - Carol

This lauranelle, Life Before the Mast, has the proper formatting for this hybrid work and takes us along as this career seaman makes a life on the sea and before the ancient mariner himself. Cool tale.

We men are probably the worst. We complain all through basic training, especially physical training. When it is all over, we brag about how tough it was and take pride in the fact that we survived it all. The worst the conditions were that we suffered through, the more pride we take in having overcome it.

Your beautiful poem makes me think of all who set off to the uncertainty of the sea for millennia, either for trade, exploration, slavery or imprisonment, or simply to communicate. All who went of their own volition were brave, and many never returned.

Sadly, that happened a lot. Seafaring in those days was a hard life and no guarantee of life or limb. Thanks for reviewing.
