Oh, Mrs. Mary my heartache for you at eight years old. It was sad enough you lost your mom but added to it was the removal of all childhood fantasies. I have now cried to the point I need tissues. As the old church song lyric are written: "Nobody knows the trouble I see, nobody knows but Jesus". You are a writer I will return to read. From a distance, I hold you in my thoughts and prayers. I pray some joy has been in your life since your childhood trauma.

You are most welcome. It is the least that I can do when you have poured out your heart.

You really deserved to win this, congratulations. How sad it was for your poor dad to have to tell you the truth, that was when you lost all the magic that life had to give you as a child. I'm sorry you lost your mother at such a young age. Well done, this was a very poignant story, and very well written. :)) Sandra xx

What a moving story about a Santa Claus and it must be hard to lose your mother and a baby sibling at your young age. I'm glad you have overcome it and live a nice retirement now.
Congratulations for winning the contest and you deserve it.

This is a very fine piece of writing. You blended finding out about Santa in with other fictional events, as children would do. Then you also linked sorrow at the loss of innocence and belief to the more important loss of your mother - truly tragic. This of course pushes Santa and the Easter Bunny far into the hinterland.

A wonderful story of loss. It must have been so hard to learn the truth at such a young age. You've written about it in few words, but managed to convey all the pain and sorrow and speculation. Congratulations on your win.

Oh what a sad and painful story this is. I'm sorry you all had to live it.
It is a terrible way to find out about Santa. I don't know why your Dad and big sister felt the need you tell you and your sister just then. Maybe finances were such that they needed to explain why there wouldn't be big presents.
Whatever the circumstances, you already had enough loss and it is sad to add that to it when you were still so young.
I hope that as time went on, your family healed as much as possible.
It is a precious picture of you and Santa.
Blessings to you and yours.

Than you Cynthia.
Christmas was my mother's joy. Dad was lost and depressed and was not going to give us Santa that year.Rose did not want us to wake up with no Santa. Dad never truly recovered even 30 yrs later. Also money was tight. If we ran out of food before payday, Ma would make us ketchup sandwiches.
Thank you
Mary

Posted as non-fiction and so easy to believe this as a true story. It is too heart-breaking to be fiction. If I were asked the question I wouldn't know when it happened, though I do remember going to sleep with my head against a bristly hairbrush, in an effort to keep awake long enough to find out. It didn't work. I fell asleep.
I suppose I must have realised finally when asked to play the part at a local infants' school, I was 35 at the time!

I can understand why your story won the contest. Very well written. I especially love the way you ended it, sadness was not so much for the loss of Santa but for the loss of a mother, and what it meant to Dad.
