Hello, Barbara. I don't know how you do it. Just reading your essay gives me a headache hahaha
Well, whatever you are doing with your stories it's working. Well done. Thank you for sharing the information

It seems editors have their little dislikes and led you a merry dance here Barbara, but these situations are new to me. I suppose writing poetry has different problems to writing novels, but I think the readers on Fanstory are pretty astute and they are free too, love Dolly x x x

Thank you for the support. I appreciate the help from my reviewers, but I find in novels they miss a lot.

Thank you, Barbara! This really helps as I never worked with professional editors. But I remember you asking me to remove "that" and I found it odd because I think that (lol) was ingrained in me by my English teachers!
It's good you can work with two types of editors. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful Labor Day weekend with your family!

I agree with you that editing can be a frustrating thing. I usually honor what my online grammar checker does, as it is usually correct. But there isn't universal agreement on all issues, and opinions vary about the need for things.
I know I tend to use more commas than many posts I see, and that many best-selling authors use fewer and are not always consistent in their use. I feel that in many cases it's obvious what's being said, and the commas aren't always necessary to clarify things, but I haven't developed the courage to go without them just yet. This last sentence is a good example, as I'm sure no one would have confused what I was trying to say had I left the two commas out.

When it comes to commas, I use this philosphy, when in doubt leave it out. LOL Thank you for support. I have found my online grammar checker is often wrong in major areas.

I enjoyed your chapter about editing because I am a former English teacher who often covered these topics. THIS more than THAT is the most misused pronoun. You might also want to tell your readers when to use WHICH and not THAT.
Hyphens are indeed a problem especially when dealing with time. Your reader will benefit from the examples you gave.

I've not encountered a problem with which so maybe I've got that one down. LOL I doubt it. Thank you for the support.

I've tried to look up grammar rules from time to time and I get so over whelmed. There's a rule, then an exception. It's hit or miss. This was very helpful. Have gun with your son. Gretchen

Thank you for the kind support and well wishes. I don't look things up on the Internet because I've discovered anybody can post things and often aren't accurate. The books I use are very well known and a few of them are texts from university classes.

The rules have changed since I went to school, especially the use of commas. I still use the Oxford comma and will continue to. Some of the new rules are nonsense. Hang in there and get it like you want it.

You are the reason I have become aware of my overuse of the word "that." This post was helpful to me. I am sure others will find it helpful, as well. Thanks for sharing, and best wishes to you.
