You know as an African American, some people try to tell me that I should not have served in the military, that I should no show patriotism. Their reasoning? because of what we as a people have suffered. My response? Show a people, any people who have not suffered. Who among us suffered more than Jesus Christ, who suffered and died on behalf of people who clamored for his death. What did he due, asked his father to forgive them.
Should I not be a Christian? Black people in this country were not mistreated by the country, but by individuals. You cannot blame an entire country for the actions of a few misguided people. Did we not fight a civil war to rectify mistakes made earlier? What about the veterans of that war? are they not worthy of celebration? All in this country who enjoy being Americans owe a debt of gratitude to our veterans. I am proud to be counted among them.

First of all, big brother, let me salute you for all of your service to our country. I loved hearing about it and never tire of hearing it.

I don't get why the disbelief of black soldiers either. Did people not hear of the Buffalo soldiers too? After all too, a lot of both races fought to free the slaves and did it with love in their hearts. Well at least the good ones.

It is so good to hear of so many who are so on board with our flag and the vets. I fear if we don't keep writing and talking about it, will it be lost on the next generation. And you are among one of my many heroes.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the kind words for my Independence poem. They means the world to me. And thank you for your big patriotic six stars too.
Thanks again, my dear big brave bro. Love, Debi

Six silver stars for this lovely post, my friend! I am a patriot and descendant of many soldiers who gladly fought the fight of freedom. I see you are too. The Duprees' came in the 1600s and I have traced them to the Civil War and found out much about my ancestors in The Book of Georgians which also records military service and honors. I wish I had that with my other relatives because I have reached a dead end (pun intended) with some of them. Common names are a buggar when researching one's ancestors. My parents had the same surname and very common, and spelled the same way. They were seated beside one another in alphabetical order in aviator's college during WWII. How about that? Both were draftsman. They married shortly afterwards. I think all my ancestors would be saddened by the state of affairs here in the United States, really, I do. Especially Mama. She and Steve were the most patriotic of us all. Thank you for this, lest we forget what July 4th is all about: Freedom from Tyranny and Freedom to govern ourselves under God. Methinks, both are fading in the rearview mirror.
Sending you my best today as always, and a SALUTE! from my family to yours. God bless, dear friend.

Thank you for this awesome poem, Debi. But most of all for the history lesson. I pride myself in knowing America's past, but Sam Wilson somehow escaped me. Your poem resonated with me. I'm very proud of what our nation has done as a whole. We could stand to clean house in congress but that's a whole other story. Lol. This was great. Happy 4th. Gretchen

My dearest Gretchen, I couldn't agree more with you. It took a lot but I kept that part purposely out of my poem, as I didn't need it yucking up my pure them of veterans and freedom. I know you understand it too well.

I love hearing about your service members too and the wars they fought in. You should be very proud of them too. Our country may be in a mess right now, but it takes nothing away from what our service men had done.
Thanks for your kind words Roy. I appreciate it. Love, Debi

Of course it's July 4th coming up this week! This is a lovely, commemorative verse for all those who fought on our behalf and gave their lives. Particularly stirring with those videos and helpfully informative with the background to Uncle Sam, this is the complete job, Debi! Well done! Debbie xo

Good morning, Debi.

What a wonderful way to wake up on this historical week then to read a poem about our fantastic nation. A nation regardless of our problems is the epitome of the world and continues to sustain people flocking here for a better life.

Thank you for posting your poem and the historical notes about Uncle Sam, which embarrassingly I did not know...

You're the best.

One correction:
And why U.S. he represnts (Represents)

Love ya,
John

Hey John, thank you so very much for the wonderful review and six stars comments. Did you by any chance read this earlier, because I woke up to finding that it I was misspelled but my computer shows it as correct now. But it was misspelled because working with the white lettering was hard for me to see after I kept rewriting certain places. But thank you for telling me and hope that is ok now.
And a happy Fourth of July to you.
Thanks again, dear friend. Love, Debi

This is a proud poem, tinged with sadness. It is poignant and well constructed. It really captures the ethos of patriotism, loyalty and the price that must be paid. As a Veteran myself (although I am English and served in the British Army) I can easily identify with all the sentiments. A good job. Well done.

In your author's notes, you might want to add a zero to November 24, 200.

Your presentation is shining in red, white, and blue - very beautiful, and I love the pictures you put together for the image.

A few years ago, I had the honor of visiting Arlington National Cemetery. It took my breath away to see all of those headstones, lined up perfectly row after row and the grass around every one perfectly manicured. I'm so glad we take care of this "reminder" of those who have served.

I hope you have a wonderful celebration on the 4th. And thanks for the nod to our vets.

xoxo
Pam

I don't think we need to worry about future generations losing touch with wars and those who serve in them, as we will always have wars:-(
reply by the author on 03-Jul-2024
Of gosh, I'm not worried about that. As long as there is evil and greed there well always be war. I'm talking patriotism, if it wouldn't have been instilled in me so deep as a child I doubt a could feel it quite so much now w our country being in a shambles.

While Memorial Day and Veterans Day are the holidays we naturally devote to honoring our veterans, it is fitting to remember that we would not have a day to celebrate passage of our Declaration of Independence, if not for the brave men and women who have fought to keep our freedom!

Thanks for honoring the real heroes of our American Story.

This is a moving patriotic poem.

Thanks so much for your help on my typo. I am glad I woke early to see it. I edited so much and working with light white, I am not surprised that happened.
Also thanks for the kind comments about my poem. I very much appreciated your sweetness.

Did you mean Veterans Day instead of Labor Day? But the weird thing is that where I am from, Memorial Day and Veterans Day are merely a nod to the subject, so our Independence Day is the big one. All about the freedom. And remembering why we were free. We were taught that is the big day to celebrate what our veterans had done in the past. We do fireworks which is symbolizing gunfire of the wars. Strange tho how those other days are important but like I said, not much more than a nod.

Our town of Annandale was a very patriotic town though and spent more time about the freedom thing than birth of our nation.
Sorry, didn't mean to give you a history lesson in my hometown, but I loved hearing about the difference in how we celebrate.

    Thanks for the awesome review.

    I did mean Veteran's day!

(Thanks for the heads up and I corrected it)

How interesting ~ the way different towns and communities put an emphasis on what holidays.

Memorial Day is HUGE here...it is THE day to remember our fallen.

    Veteran's Day is less so.

I agree that without our veterans we would not have attained or held on to our independence, so I think your poem has great merit!

You can share your hometown history with me any day!

    :)

This is a wonderful tribute to all of those who gave their lives in the wars. I'm from Ireland so our men didn't go to war, but my partner is Polish and his Grandad fought in WWII and his Dad served time in the Polish army. His Grandmother told him some stories but didn't like to speak much of those terrible times as it upset her too much. Sorry to hear of the loss of your partner in such way. That must have been such a tough time. Take care and best wishes
