Man, ya described what it is to be "Southern" -- some may not understand the lifestyle, but it's the closest thing to Heaven on Earth in my book.
God, I sat back and closed my eyes, thinking back to those good o' summers here in Alabama. We love our football and our Sunday evenings with family.
Love this!

WOW! This is THRILLING to get your sixer on this piece! From my "country-filled" heart, I thank you so much! So glad you reminisced along with the poem. Yeah....the Sunday afternoons. A lot of good talkin' with people coming and going. I'm so glad you felt this work deserved your highest regard. Thank you SO much! :-)) Sue

You have some wonderful memories there Sue, I love the picture you paint with your words, chewing tobacco, buckets for drawing water from the treasured well, cattle a grazing while gospel songs your a singing. It sounds like a awesome childhood was had by many. I have to admit I do not like the big city life, my town growing up was only 30,000 strong, which is pretty small in over populated England! I really enjoyed it friend, very nice!

Well even if I didn't have roots in Tennessee myself, I'd appreciate the love and longing in this poem. Love pictures painted with your words of a precious way of life. Great job.

I enjoyed this poem very much. It gave me a lovely, clear picture of Tennessee and country life there. Some great images and rhymes; the rhythm is really good too. At times, I thought you might have been talking about my town in Australia! Well done. :)

Very gawd. I've bin to Tinersea, when working in Alabama, I hud to go and sayer gracelands, dude. A nye-ace puoem.
My effort at the drawl. I did like it down there, but my Fav place was mid Texas. Blimey, the girls just fall for the Brit Accent. How is it that Texas has the most beautiful girls on the planet?
But you paint a petty picture of Tennesse.

Let me tell you about them southern girls! They won't walk outta the house without lookin' 100%! Pretty as the day is long! And, I can see how the Brit accent would have made them melt. Those Texas gals have class! Thanks for the review, by jove! :-)) Sue
-
You're kiddin me. They do have class, that is true. I fell in love with a lass who was of the first church of America. She was made to go to Bible school in Boston and I lost all her info. As well as Julies, Rynatas, Lisa's, Tami and a few other friends. I still sing - all my ex's live in Texas..LOL.
Best year or so, of my life. But I noticed Texan women come in two sizes. The mega delux family pack size. Of the Hot bod, size. Never met such friendly peeps in my years working for Boeing Military. NY g/f was a two timing cheat. Now I just don't like NY, as she was one of the more honest.PAH! her mates bragged about having over 20 b/f's whilst in a relationship.. LOLOL. America is a different culture.
Eating with just a fork! Bad manners, here. Men wearing hats indoors. I'd never seen that before. Nor had I seen a gun, in real life.
-
America has so many cultures, you couldn't name 'em all. Other countries think us narrow-minded, but what they don't get is that we have a multi-national country within our own borders. We have a lot of understanding and major appreciation for those cultures and travel far and wide (from coast to coast) to visit them and experience them!
Hell, I own 3 guns! HA! I love going to the shooting range. Whoa! Exciting stuff to hit those targets. Great sport. And I haven't even done a 'drive-by shooting'! Imagine that!
Well, just sitting here thinking of writing a poem. Maybe I'm fresh out of words. For today, at least. I'm snowed in here right now and am downright bored!!!
-
Phew, glad you're snowed in. (bet hubby is too)lol. But with TWO GUNS!
Something like, 1 man in 50 gets shot over there.
Drive by. Well there are drive by banks, MacDonalds, so heck, why not shooting.
Caught with a gun or knife over here. Prison, for 5 years or more.
I wonder how long it will be, before someone thinks it's a good idea to shoot your president. I was stunned at how Yanks have guns and think nowt of it. And POLICE having guns is insane. Rob a bank here and the police will hit you with their plastic stick, not shot you in to next year...lolol
-
You Brits'll never get it, Andy. You're reading too many English tabloids, mate!
If there is one single whisper from a talking head on the tellie that "what if" someone were to shoot Obama, then it would hit the front pages in England as being gospel.
Every president we have is in danger. Every leader in any country in the world is always a target. Statistics show that most policemen never have to even unholster their gun. I sure am glad they have them, though.
There are no guns allowed in Australia, either. My son was at his Dad's house about 4 years ago by himself. He was upstairs. He heard some rummaging going on. He realized the house was being robbed. He quietly locked himself in the bedroom. Thank goodness he was armed! ONLY WITH A TELEPHONE!! Crikey, if someone were to do a home invasion here, I wouldn't go looking for them to shoot, but I sure would have protection if they did try to come after me. A lot of mean people in the world. Thank goodness for our 2nd Amendment!
What most people don't think about either is this: Heroin is illegal. Cocaine is illegal. And the list goes on. BUT, somehow all the bad guys have it. So, if a good-hearted Congress meant well and put pen to paper outlawing guns, does anyone realize that someone like me, a law-abiding citizen would not have a weapon, but every single bad guy out there would?
Love a good debate!!! Can't ya just tell? HA!

This was a very upbeat, happy piece tracing your childhood memories. I loved: "The hills and hollers , to my eyes,
A heavenly terrain. Where cattle graze beneath blue skies
Beside a bending lane" I think everyone who reads this will be transported Sue. excellent, joyful piece.

Wonderful descriptions that carry the reader into the southern essence, Sue. Beautiful flow and warmth comes from the poem. Having lived in SC for a few years years ago, I know the southern roots run very deep, so could relate to what you were saying. No nits, or changes to recommend. Lovely flow and rhyme to the poem. Joyce

I enjoyed your poem very much. It brought back memories of my 17 years living in the south in Panama City, Florida.
I could hear the southern drawl in the voice of your poem, as illustrated here:
A gathering place, the courthouse square
Where farmers had a yarn
'bout how their crop was doin' fair
'n work needed on the barn
Thanks for the memories!
