Hi, Sue.
Let's hope that with each war we all learn more just how futile MOST of them are. We're lucky ta still be here ta 'learn', unlike the brave soldiers sent there ta be killed, and the countless civilians maimed and killed in the name of 'right' - always claimed by both sides.
Some great lines here - 'square is straight' made me laugh.

We all need ta 'keep asking' til some sense is adopted, or the war-mongers are made go and fight in the front line instead of sendin others.

Good luck and best wishes, Ray xx

Well, I wrote my recent poem, "Gaza" with heartbreak. It just doesn't seem to end. In all 4 corners of the globe. I haven't seen evidence yet of man learning from his mistakes, no matter how large!! I don't like being cynical, but somebody PLEASE show me where we've learned (sigh)... Thanks for your very kind review. Always appreciated...Sue

great poem, well structured and well said with the image of vietnam, and only at fourteen years old then, this is another great example for the contest, and I found no errors and no revisions, good luck, and thank yuou for sharing.

grace, yes...at such an early age, the influence of those days was like a tsunami. Tossed about and lost. One day, the world makes sense and before I knew it, nothing resembled what was before. Thank you for your review and compliments. With regards, Sue

Alliteration such as 'protests and placards,' combines with sprinkled rhyme such as 'spews/news,' and the dramatic repetition of the 'why' sentences. Written in poetic format. I thought there may be some metaphor in this:
'Getting all A's - Square equals straight? Divisions wide, still don't know' but perhaps I was trying to read something into it that is not there, since you didn't mention it. Anyway, you have the necessary elements, and have written a good entry for the contest. Best wishes to you,
Lois

Lois, yes, the Square equals straight is metaphorical, as is "divisions wide". Wow, you're good! Ha! I meant to put "metaphors" in the author's notes, but missed it in error. Will adjust. Thank you for highlighting this. And thank you for your generous review and compliments. With regards, Sue

The questions will keep coming, and know one really wants to deal with it all. The anwers are not forthcoming, if they ever come at all! This was a confusing time in our nations history, like fog on a roll. Great dialogue here, if anyone is listening. grassroots08

Nicely done, I liked it! You did a great job of expressing your confusion -- I don't think most of us really understand half of what goes on in this crazy world. Anyway, good job.

So glad you "heard" the confusion. I wasn't sure if I would even post this because it was so confusing! HA!! Really glad you liked this piece. Thanks much for your very kind review. Sue

Awesome writing of a chapter
in history that stained the
soul and heart of a nation,
written with emotion, with
a sense of the times and the
hysteria that was taking place
during those times.
And after all these years no
clear answers.
A tale told with sincerity and
feelings bringing one back to those
times.
Well done

fastdigits, so glad this resonated with you. I have continued to ponder those feelings of my youth during those times. I'm glad I wrote this just to "lay it out". Kind of a release. Thank you for your very kind review and comments. With regards, Sue

Fortunately I'm A LOT YOUNGER than you friend, ha ha, Sorry! I was 15 going on 16 when England went to war with Argentina and consequently jointed the army at 17 even though the conflict was long over. I did spent 6 months in the Falklands when I was 19 helping rid the island of mines and rebuilding and strengthening the colony, during its winter[Bloody coldest place I have ever been] war does affect our young minds, some more than others, that I know friend. Great post Sue, I really liked it.

The Vietnam era was a crazy time. Through most of it, I was enjoying the British evasion of musical groups. I was too young to go to war, and I was too ignorant of the goings on to protest. I guess I was busy being a kid. It was probably one of the worst times in US History. Most of the men and women that survived saw so much devastation and attrasities that 40 plus years later they still can't talk about it. An excellent poem. Thanks for sharing. mstad55

Thanks so much for sharing your times during that era. Same with me. My two brothers were 16, too young to go to war. I was too young to know what was going down. And trying to "fit" in somewhere! HA! Insane! Sure did love that British Invasion of music, though! Whew! Still love it. Thanks so much for your very generous review! Sue

You use alliteration and a "sprinkle" of rhyme in the first stanza, so you have fulfilled the requirements of the contest. You do show, how human beings who live everyday lives are confused by the mayhem of war and protest. The important question, as you point out, is "Why?" and some days I fear there is no answer.

Yes, the why. I went to the Memorial Wall when I was in my 30's. I was a mother by then. Thought I was just going to visit a great memorial. Did not know that I would break down and weep for those "children" of 18 and 19 years of age. It became a time where I could actually "feel" what had gone on during my youth. Thank you very much for your review of this work. And for your comments. With regards, Sue

I enjoyed this poem, and related to much of it, although I missed some of the American issues obviously. I appreciate the serious message of unfathomable conflict, but my very favourite line is "Square equals straight?" lol Good luck in the contest.
