I feel the same way! My family's girls (dogs) are treated like princesses, and every dog deserves to be treated that way. You made several good points here. Thank you for sharing this rant, and best wishes to you.

Thank you Jessi. A lovely review, and I know your dogs are much loved from the stories you write. They are blessed to be in your family.

Essays such as this one always make me feel doubly sad, because they remind me of the cases where young infants are hurt, not just animals. To me that is the worst scenario, and it seems to be one, like the animals that we just stand back and ignore. kay

You are right, and generally they are the same sort of people, abuse and blame others for their own negligence, anger and lack of self control. I also hate to see abuse of people especially children.
Thanks so much for your thoughtful review.

Hello Wendy,
You've touched on a subject that makes my blood boil. I watched my pastor's son mistreat his dog once, and I called his dad and told him what I saw. I almost called the police. I can't tolerate mistreating pets of any kind. Those who will mistreat a pet will also mistreat a human being. Some people get frustrated at whatever is happening in their own lives that they may be powerless to change, so they take it out on their pets. We need a license to drive, and even to hunt or fish. How much more would it behoove us to have a license to own a pet? Believe me, I hate government interference, I don't want more rules and regulations in my life. At the same time, I don't believe that everyone should have a pet. Puppies and kittens grow up, just like kids do. They have needs and requirements and if a person doesn't feel able to meet those needs, they should forgo pet ownership. Thanks for sharing this gal. It was infuriating to read, and yet needs to be addressed. I hope it will embolden us all to speak up when we see animal abuse. Have a blessed day.

I am with you. I cannot stand to see an animal being mistreated - particularly when it is the owner's fault. I agree, one should have to apply to be a dog owner, there should be checks, and spot reviews, and there should be compulsory training. And i am glad you reported the boy. Hopefully he has learned something, a lesson for life.
I appreciate your very thoughtful review very much, thank you sincerely.

When you talked about how Bobby was treated, I thought I wouldn't be able to finish reading your rant. His story brought tears to my eyes.
I grew up with lots of hunting dogs, in a big city, which I've written about. We had a large backyard for them to run and play in. However, Dad and his hunting friends took the dogs out to wooded areas and let them "run wild," as Dad called it. The dogs would stay out for about an hour and naturally return on their own to Dad's camp site.
Before purchasing a pet, people should think of the purchase as bringing home another member of the family. Thanks for this rant. Best wishes in the contest.

Your last comment is so true. There should also be some sort of application process, with checking and training, before people are granted the privilege of owning a dog. Thanks too for your encouragement, and the good wishes.

Great rant Wendy, I do not understand why people get dogs if they are going to neglect them or are not responsible enough to keep them on leashes. With dog parks and doggie day care centers, they do not have to be alone for long periods of time. What better exercise than to take your dog for a walk?
Best wishes,
Mary

Exactly. And there should be some sort of checking and training process before one is granted the privilage of dog ownership. Thanks so much for your review - greatly appreciated.

There's a dog to the west and down the yard that cries a large part of the night, I just don't like seeing acdog outside at night, particularly at night, our dog has two walks a day, and has a large old friend called Ben, who is walked about the same as him, they delight in meeting each other. Our dog can fit under Ben's stomach. One shouldn't hit a dog, you're right. Well done Wendy, good luck, blessings Roy

Thank you Roy, a lovely review. Yes, Sunny and I ususally go for a walk twice a day, and/or have another outing. We always meet and converse with other dog walkers, and it's so lovely.

In my youngest son's gated community apartment complex, there's a $500 fine if you're caught not cleaning up after your dog. Every time I take Harley for a walk there, I see numerous dog piles. Harley has an attachment on his leash that holds doggy bags. I hate seeing dogs that stay outside all the time and never get any attention. It's not fair to the dog. I am in agreement with this contest entry. Thank you for sharing and good luck.

Thank you Barbara. You understand perfectly, and you are right - it's not hard to be a responsible pet owner. And the more love one gives, the more one receives, as for people. Thanks too for the good wishes.

This comes at the right time for me. Our neighborhood is having trouble with a fairly new neighbor and their treatment of their dogs. Yesterday, I called animal control because I was fearful of the dogs being killed on a busy side street here. They've chained them up on short chains and left them outside like that. They frequently turn them loose on purpose. They tie them up and them torment them. The animal control picked up the dogs and are trying to work with those people. Everyone around here is concerned for these animals. In thirty years, this is the first time I've complained about a neighbor. People like this shouldn't be allowed to own any animal.

Thank you for your review, very thoughtful and meaningful, but so sad to hear about the treatment of those poor dogs. I am very glad you reported the people involved, and I hope they learn how to do better. I also hope that others hear about it and make sure they do better with their own dogs. You are right - such people don't deserve the privilege of having a pet.

I agreed completely with your rant and hope it does well in the contest. Dogs, treated well, are the most loving, responsive, loyal pets imaginable. I cherish the memory of our poodles that "taught" us how to be dog owners.

A great rant and strong entry to the contest. You described a scene that depicts the cruelty and punishment to a dog that was innocently trying to greet a friend. Overall, the piece shows the need for pet owners to be responsible, not cruel.
