Hi Beth!
Oh my gosh... you must have been terrified! lol You poor little thing! I remember those wooden splinters, I've had plenty of them, though never under my nails. I also had a doctor like yours, delivered me, and my little brother, had hospital privileges, even though he was technically just a GP. That was back in the 60s and 70s though, and GP's back then delivered babies and all sorts of other things. Mine happened to have been a surgeon in Hungary before he defected and came here. He became a GP because he would have to go back to the beginning to be a surgeon again. Not as a GP. He took great care of us though.
Have a great day! Thanks for the story!
Good luck in the contest!
Susan :)

Thank you Susan. I really apprecate the review and I enjoyed reading your comments. Yes, I miss those doctors who could treat you for everything and knew everyone by name.

Yes, just the words of the doctor saying let's put her under would have been enough to scare about any child to death. But the good thing about either is that it doesn't take long to keep you from worrying about anything. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Ric, If I could I would held my breath until I passed and then he wouldn't have needed the ether. I appreciate the review and comments.

Well done Beth! This is a great story and I can believe every word. Adults have a lot of difficulty understanding how a child's mind works. They have many fears and great imaginations, therefore the smallest problem can be a catastrophe in their world. Good job! Nancy:)

Thank you Nancy. I'm glad you enjoyed my story. Yes, my mom had no idea how tramatized I was by the fact he intended to put me under.

I couldn't help but smile as I read this contest entry. I never had a near death experience as a child. LOL. But my boys I'm sure could share stories comparable to yours. I enjoyed reading and good luck with the contest.

Thank you Barbara. I'm glad you got a chuckle out of it. It is funny now looking back how freaked out I was about being put to sleep.

LOL, what a hoot! This is a wonderfully written story. I think it could do very well in this contest. You were able to provide some drama and yet some gentle humor also. Excellent writing. Terry.

Thank you, Terry. I so glad you got a chuckle out of my little story. Kids can get very worked up over something that adults would consider very minor.

Nicely written. Good work.
"Go get the either and the mask," - auto-correct? (ether)
It gets so that you can't count on MSWord's red underlining. Grrrr.
Good luck in the contest.

Thank you Wayne. I appreceiate the review and heads on on auto-correct. It had to be that because I looked the spelling up to make sure.

Oh my goodness, you still remember this after all this time, no lasting effects I hope and you were lucky to be put under here as they don't afford that to children in the UK under the NHS, they have to grin and bear the pain! Ha ha ha, a fun post Beth, love Dolly x

Thank you Dolly, I they use ether here any more because it is so flamable and I doubt if just nurse would be allowed to adminster anything to put a child to sleep.

This reminds me of when I was about seven and had to have a tooth out. They used to use what they called laughing gas (Nitrous Oxide), but all the reast was exactly as you described, I still remember the great fear of the distinctive-smelling black mask, and the fear that I would never waken up, so holding my breath... kay

Thank you Kay. I appreciate the review and you sharine you experience with your tooth. I don't think adults realize how scary these things can be for kids unless they've experience them as well

Oh my gosh, what a character you were! I loved the way you told this story right from a little child's mind and how one would interpret being "put under." Loved this and hope this does well in the contest!
Typo?
"Go get the either and the mask," (ether?)

Thank you, Helen. I guess I was a character. I think auto-correct must have changed that because I looked up the spelling before using that word.

Thank you Teri. Maybe if my mom had known they would be putting me to sleep, she could have better prepared me to what see so scary at the time.
