Neat story! The dialogue is realistic and moves the story along well. The doctor humors the crabby old colonel in a way that is amusing yet caring.
"start with pulling these open li-" -- this line is a bit confusing to me. What word is intended that gets cut off? Should it say "pulling open these bli--"? (Or, am I missing something?)
I like the ending--understated.

This story was as funny as it was serious. The Colonel would test the patience of most nurses I reckon and most would not be able to handle him. It takes a special kind of lady to be able to give and take the colonels personality. She is a true diamond and he knows it BUT he will never tell her that, no n n no no no : ) a great little story with some kick-ass dialogue, good luck!

Thanx, Hitch, for taking the time to read this one and to really get everything I was trying to convey....I always worry that these aren't as 'understandable' to folks who aren't 'in my head' when I can't use words to describe what's in my head...LOL!! ;) ;) When I used to volunteer at one of the places near home and there was always one or two quite surly or, shall we say, challenging folks (male and female) that would really 'rag' you face-to-face' but that would just sing your praises to the staff... always made me laugh when a staff member would let me know about a compliment or something! :) ;) I did always admire the doctors and the nurses that could continuously smile and be cheery from morning til night, even when some of the patients were anything but "delightful" to them! :) ;) Thanx again for the review, sir, and take care over there! :) Yvette :)

This is a great read. I was lucky enough to have done some shifts as a fill-in RN in a V.A. hospital back in the 1980's and I could almost picture myself back there, dealing with some of the WWII vets while I was reading this.
I found nothing to suggest in the way of edits or corrections. It was a good tribute indeed. Good luck in the contest.

This may be your best job of characterization. Is that a word? What I mean is that you do a wonderful job of developing the two characters in the dialogue. I love both the doctor and the Colonel. This dialogue is easy to follow and very entertaining. Nobody means anything that they say until the very end. You have to read between the lines. That is hard to craft.

This may be your best job of characterization. Is that a word? What I mean is that you do a wonderful job of developing the two characters in the dialogue. I love both the doctor and the Colonel. This dialogue is easy to follow and very entertaining. Nobody means anything that they say until the very end. You have to read between the lines. That is hard to craft.

Good job on showing us a grumpy colonel who hates being laid up with a bad leg but enjoys his doctor's visits. The doctor has a great personality, so they tease each other and get along just fine, though they openly pretend not to. There must be many such pairs in VA hospitals. :)
