What a harrowing story. It's sad that people with so little knowledge of children are put in charge of these impressionable young minds and easily bruised libidos. I'm glad you finally found the right place for your children.
My daughter lucked out with an excellent nursery school and pre-K. It's when she got into elementary school that we encountered difficulty. The school was relatively new, and it was the principal's first assignment. She was so concerned with making a name for herself and the school that she ignored the children, like my daughter, with special needs, focusing only on the ones who could get the highest test scores or perform best in school shows. It was years before therapy and caring teachers in later schools were able to undo the damage.
Thank you for writing a very interesting and informative story, one that alerts parents to the importance of taking their children's complaints seriously, and pulling them out of a harmful situation before permanent damage can be done.

You're very welcome, Beth. And, as far as sharing my daughter's story, whom better to share it with than another caring mom?

There's nothing to learning how to love and have compassion, it seems to me that a daily dose of empathy goes a lot further than a double degree in arts/Psychology. Why is it that those lacking in human skills are the ones who study welfare subjects? Love is essential in dealing with kids. Beautifully written dear Beth, blessings Roy

Thank you for another great review. Yes, a lot of the people work with kids don't have the empathy they need. Love is the key.

Bravo for Carol helping you to find out about the issue Don was having at the day care. And, bravo to you, Beth, for taking swift action to protect your children. I'm thrilled you found a suitable new place for them. It sounded as if they really enjoyed being kid again. You are right about how some think they know everything there is just because they have a degree.
Thanks for sharing. I'm enjoying reading these since I wasn't on FS when first posted.
Respectfully, Jan

Aw, Beth, I would have told that woman just what I thought of her! How cruel and uncaring she was. No wonder Don was having accidents, it makes me so mad when people do that to young children. I wonder if she would like someone watching her go to the loo!! This was a really traumatic story, I'm glad it all worked out in the end though. Warm hugs, and Happy New Year! :)) Sandra xx

Thank you Sandra. Just because as place gets a good write up doesn't always mean it is right for your children. You have watch their reaction. I'm glad I got the children away from their fast.

Hi Beth. So pleased that you 'revived' this piece. It is heartwarming vignette with an important message to any parent. years ago, I had a similar experience with my daughter. Her daycare new teacher was all publicly sugar and spice, but she was revealed to be a tyrant. The problem was quickly resolved. Cheers - DJ

Hello:
Mea Culpa. My health took a slight turn for the worse, but is back to normal (for me).
You brought back mixed feelings regarding daycare. I can to a degree understand what you had to do. It's as if you are caught between a rock and a hard place. Your child's mental and physical health means everything. When it is jeopardized you tend to question if a certain daycare is appropriate.
Really enjoyed the read!
Take care,
Ray

Comment from Samuel Dickens
That last sentence is the certainly the truth. The world is full of nincompoops with a big education, and I've known or had to work with many of them. I could write a story about that, in fact. My youngest granddaughter goes to daycare each day, and how I wish she didn't have to. Thank goodness you eventually found a good one. Something here is amiss--"They told me Don wouldn't to it at all"

Thank you so much for the review and comments Samuel. We certainly have to be careful about the people we trust to take care of our children. I imagine there is more to be concerned about today than there was back then.

Comment from Donald O. Cassidy
I can understand your frustration of finding sensible and proper daycare.
A filthy one seemed plainly incompetent and out for money. It should have been shut down earlier.
As for ms Psychology/Drama major, I think she generalized in drama for all. This made a victim of Don
The policy of mandating a policed or watched pee also failed to consider individuals. Don was within his rights to expect privacy.
In defense of public school policy I know about, teachers lined up their students in a routine: first, they got a drink of water at the fountain; next they went to the bathroom to pee. Whether or not a teacher or an aide supervised this bathroom visit, I don't know.
About some Catholic school policy of years ago. a nun boasted of the efficiency of playing jazz and hard rock on the radio to for entertainment of the kdis. They also played the radio as a lullaby to induce sleep for the kids.
I would certainly raise my eyebrows at such a policy. As you may know, any radio turned up loud and used forcefully can be a nightmare.

Experiences with young ones is definitely traumatic at times. Finding quality daycare is a major problem, especially now with all the predator types. The message here comes through loud and clear for parents to watch, listen, and learn. Glad you revive this one, Beth. td

Thank you so much for the review and nice comments. I hope parents do get the message. There is much little children aren't able to tell there parents and as you say, predators are everywhere.

This is a very interesting. It will make a good addition to your memoirs. Some little boys are very modest and do not want anyone watching them in the restroom. My siblings were all younger than me. I remember my mother took my brother in for a preschool medical examine. No way could they get him to undress down to his shorts. He threw such a royal fit and my mother had to take back home. After she did, he told her his shorts were torn.
This is well written, Beth.
