This just gets better and better, Gretchen! The tension is so skilfully crafted that I find myself holding my breath. It's built to a crescendo and then you let it quietly simmer in Strait's memory to be used at a later date. I hate that man and am willing the deed to be done!
Small edit: but they won't see (the) second one.
Well done and a virtual six from me! Debbie

Yes, so many times children lie in their rooms and listen, afraid to fall asleep, afraid to get up, dreading what might come. But children grow up and fear subsides. Thanks for sharing.

Good grief Herbert! That sure packed a wallop. That was grand storytelling. You already had me firmly entrenched in your story, but whammo! You are bracing us for a humdinger! Karen

Excellent plot development. Nicely written, too.
Dewey might be a bit more cerebral in this chapter than he is developed to be, but it's plausible.
Best wishes.

This is excellent writing. Huck lives in dread because he understands his brother and what he is feeling and he knows there is something cooking in his mind that at some point will happen. He probably isn't sure of the outcome or whether it will be Dewey or the father that will be the victim.

Wow, a lot to take, I like your story a lot! It moved me, and I enjoy reading from beginning to the end, and it's a clear, easy straight story to understand. Too bad that I have only 5 star, and your work I think it worth "exceptional" 6 star review.

The tension here was palpable - you've created it perfectly through your characters. Huck is right, and I dread to think of the imminent confrontation between their father and Dewey. Dewey is not a simpleton, despite the shovel, and the father will push one step too far, and then it will be on for one and all. And he won't forgive Huck either for being a "smart-ass". Very well written, superb.

Matthew strait is a horrible character, but the boys are ticking time bombs. Thank you for this. Gretchen

Hi, GW

I like it. I don't like the fact that the father beats the kids, but I like the way the kids think and that Dewey standing up to his father. He may be sorry, but he is standing up to him.

It sounds like daddy is having an affair with someone in town. That's why he disappeared last night and why he disappeared tonight. Probably a good thing for everybody. I don't know if momma gets violence from him. Too often if the kids are beaten the momma is too.

But, he is the breadwinner so their lives could be worse if he dies or goes to his new girlfriend and divorces. That's why Dewey
can stand up to him because his mind is on whatever girl he has in town

I enjoyed reading your book ppchapter

Ohhhh, man. I am getting such a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. So now the title makes sense, and I'm waiting on tenderhooks for it to come to fruition. Like you said last chapter in answer to my review: in this saga, there's no happy ending. Somebody's going to end up worse off than when the story began. Oy.

You are a masterful storyteller. xoxo

Thank you. This one is so heavy and dark, that writing Detour is keeping me sane. I prefer comedic writing, but sometimes those darker stories just refuse to stay dormant. Thank you for this. Gretchen

    This is true.
Detour is keeping me quite buoyant, as well.
