Very interesting reflections about your first dys at school, and the adjustments you had to make. It was certainly different in those days, some things better, and others worse. Hitting a child hard enough to make a red mark is certainly no longer acceptable (and rightly so). Well done.

Thank you Wendy, When I grew up the theory was that if you didn't smank are whip I child they weren't being correctly guided and they would suffer as a result. Some even believed a women needed to punished in that way. Thank goodness no one in my family believed that.

Thank you Dolly. Miss Chatham had never been married and must have been raised in a strict. Some kid irritated her worst than others. She was always extremely nice to me.

Your memory is so good at not only capturing these early childhood events but all the details of everything you saw and the people in your life back then. I can imagine you were bored silly with those mandatory naps. And wow, what a change to use those flushing toilets. I'm glad you're still in touch with one of these classmates!

I guess everything was new and more exciting back then and i paid closer attention. These days things are so exciting that I put them in long term memory. I keep tract by email and facebook other kids I knew from early grands.

Of all the memories of seventy seven years it seems when I read tales of grammar school that I find myself traipsing back to my days there, with Sr. Agnes Joseph and Sr Donatus and Rev Hayes, to find far more joy than I did in High School.

I think mention of grammer school always brings up your own memories. I liked both grammer school and high school but after sitting in classes for nine months, I was always ready for the summer vacation.

Excellent recitation of a kid's first school experience.
Well written.
I remember the warm chocolate milk that was delivered to the room just as we went out to recess. We didn't get to drink it until after. I threw it up and detest chocolate to this day.

Thank you Wayne. Sometimes, we got an apple in the middle of the afternoon. Sometimes it was milk but never chocolate.

I still remember one young woman who must have been a practice teacher showing me tht two circles on one another would make an eight. In those days, teachers didn't have to worry about kids calling lawyers on them. I still recall traumatizing moments when, because I spoke out of turn, the teacher made me sit and watch as all the children laughed and played around me, and I would be crying away.

My brother had problems all his life. My mom told me a teacher used to close him in the closet.
