Interesting first memory. I was left hanging wondering about the reason you marked that episode as the day you stopped communicating with her. You wrote "it was determined". Who determined it? Did it come out in counseling during the difficult time? I think the alluding to a difficult time you were going to go though in the future may be reworded or cut...and maybe you can re-create the feeling of rejection you must have felt being blamed for your brother's actions.
It is hard to go back in time and sort the memory in your own head from the stories told by the family about the event. You tell a very interesting story and I look forward to more chapters. Esther

Thank you for stopping by taking the time to review my work and leaving such a nice comment. This was a very difficult time in my life and it was one that imprinted on my brain very clearly what happened that day. Even as a little girl of 3 1/2 years old I was aware of what was going on. Not only was aware of what was going on, but I did not know where my twin brother was, and that added to my fear.

I am truly sorry if this were a true factual account. My wife's family suffered through an intense fire when she was young. I know how terrible it is. Thank you for posting this believable and well-written account of a frightening chapter.

This sounds very traumatic and real. It is a well written narrative. If it is an account of a real experience, perhaps you may wish ti put it under Biographical Non-Fiction instead.
As parents we always have to be mindful of the fragility of a child's mind.
Wel done.

Thank you so very much for your very kind words. I appreciate it. I agree with you that as parents we need to be very careful about the words that we speak to our children because they can damage them even at a very early age. I also believe that as we raging our children, we need to give a good balance of encouragement, along with a good amount of proper correction.

I don't think you really did anything wrong, sometimes mothers seem to feel the girl is responsible for the misadventures of the boy, but they're not, beautifully written, well done, blessings Roy

I am so glad she got the animals out in time, and that your brother was not hurt. I understand too how this terrible incident affected your relationship with your mother. In reality all the animals owe their lives to you and your quick alert.

Your recollection of your first memory turned into a well written and enjoyable first chapter. The imagery of the barn fire and the emotions surrounding it (fear and confusion) are right on the surface. Your reflection on how this event influenced your relationship with your mother later in life adds an unexpeted layer to the story. I think many can relate to that because often there is long-term consequences of childhood trauma. Well done.

This trauma caused a rift between you and your Mother that never mended Patricia and we all have some significant event that changed our way of thinking. A poignant post and I am so glad your brother was unharmed in this fire. How sad this traumatic scene is and so very frightening for a child, thank you for sharing this with us, love Dolly x

That must be a terrible feeling and memory to live with, after all you were not the main culprit in this disaster, and not being able to talk to your mother must have been an added burden, an excellent read and chapter, I look forward to reading more****kahpot

I remember your story about burning the barn. It's awful how your mother put that burden on you as both of you were the same age. She was very hard on you all your life. Nevertheless, you became a loving mother unlike your own mother. Thanks for sharing.
