Hi Crystie,

I love to watch the geese at Creamer's Field, a bird sanctuary here in Fairbanks, Alaska where I live. They returned in April and I have made several trips to just sit and watch them and write. Thank you for sharing your free verse. Good luck in the contest.

Kim

This free verse is packed full of informative and colourful detail which all helps to build up towards the climax of this magnificent display of unified flight formation. Some beautiful imagery here throughout but particularly in your third stanza. My only slightest niggle would be the syntax of the second sentence of the first stanza and why it starts with 'How' and then fails to ask a question? I know that you're trying to make this into an exclamation but it ends up simply sounding unfinished. Notwithstanding, this is excellent and, without doubt, a strong contender! Good luck! Debbie

Such a well-written poem. We have geese that fly south every fall, before the cold weather sets in; they fly in the shape of a "v"; meaning I'm sure that they feel victorious and they can fly to a warmer climate.

Thank you for taking time to read and review. V for victorious sounds great, too!

I sense you are on a geese theme lately. I am quick like that! Your poetry is moving and lovely. The picture makes us want to fly away with them as well. Good work. Karen

I love your beautiful free verse. Thank you for introducing me to these
beautiful creatures and their flight south out of the cold winter's path.
Your imagery is wonderful and gives the reader a feeling of being there
watching them soar up into the sky.
best of luck in the contest.

This is a timely poem as I saw geese arriving at our local pool yesterday, they made a lot of noise in the sky before skimming the surface of the pool with a splash landing. A fine animated post Crystie and the honking was loud and clear here, I'm glad the geese are back, love Dolly x

Thank you for your great review. I am looking for geese now around our valley, but I seem to be a little too far away from the best places still.

Your poem reminds me of those misty autumn mornings when I'd lead my students onto the playground to find Canada geese gathered on the soccer field. Wonderfully descriptive free verse entry for the contest. Best wishes!

The migratory birds are always so amazing. Some can actually sleep with half their brain while flying. I especially liked your conclusion:
"chorus of more muddy honks, to announce their progress and power,
their ache to aim higher." It's fun to see how they determine who leads.
Best wishes in the contest!

Very nice complementary picture art choice.
"the angry, frozen face of Winter," Good personification and imagery.
"Each night is spent drowsing on park lawns or golf courses" Oh, is that how they rest during their migration?
Very good imagery throughout the piece, as I was transported right into the various scenes, watching these wonderful birds migrate.

Thank you for your great review. I used to work next to a golf course, where the Canada geese took over a good portion in fall.
