Well, you obviously can't remember all of this, but you lucky to have had someone who could and share the whole story with you, so you can share it with us. :-) Thanks for sharing.

Yes, this was a story my mother related a few times. She really thought she was going to die. Of course I have a good memory. If hadn't been asleep, I might have remembered it LOL Just kidding.

Good morning, Beth!
Sent chills through my body as I read the story. I know there are few women who would be able to wear the shoes of Lucille or her mother in that situation today. We become so dependent on knowing others will handle the problem that we wouldn't know where to begin. True Pioneer Women!
Smiles, Carol

And so the story of Beth begins:-)

First sentence of the fourth paragraph, you want a comma instead of a period.

I love the male POV here - not wanting to hear the "noise" of Beth crying, afraid to hold her, he was "expected" to get acquainted with his daughter" . . .

A "birth poison" - is she referring to PPD? Of course, they didn't know what it was then, so I guess birth poison works.

Drinking lots of water is still recommended for those with high blood pressure. How did the doctor know she had too much protein in her urine?

A scary episode you've written about here, Beth. Childbirth is a traumatic event and it is bound to have a short-term effect on the body.

Thanks for sharing another chapter in your family's life.

Thank you Pam, I appreciate the review and comments. I don't know how the doctor new about the protein, but I was told he said that. He must have read it in a medical journal, because I'm sure he didn't test her urine.

Phew that would have been a worry, toxaemia, facilities these day would probably cover that, they seem a whole lot more knowledgeable than they have, lucky you had a mother that cared, if anything had happened to our grand's parents we would have adopted them in an eye blink, well done, blessings Roy

Thank you Roy but I do know of people who still get that and if it is before the birth the doctor will take the baby early. One reviewer said she had to have hers 10 weeks early. It can still be fatal to both mother and child.

Goodness, that was a dramatic episode. Perhaps she did save your mother's life by instinct. Very interesting start to life for you, and I can see why you were an only child! I'm glad everything worked out well. Well written story.

Thank you Wendy. Mom wanted more children in spite of that. She had one miscarriage but Daddy was happy with just one child.

That is a story to be retold over and over, again and again within the walls of your family's home
I can clearly see the scene as if I was a witness to it

Wow! What a close call. And so many women back then died.
Nicely written. Good work.
(I weighed 9lb 15 1/2 oz. One of my brothers 10lb 3oz.)
Best wishes.

Thank you, Wayne. I really appreciate the review and comments. I remember when we lived in New Orleans and Archie Manning's wife had their first child. I think it was Payton. He weighted over 12 lbs. I really felt sorry for her. I don't know Eli weighted.

You relate her symptoms so well, it scared me as well as Anna. If those are first signs of a stroke, I hope I never have one! Interesting cure to help the poor woman. My daughter had a head of black hair too when she was born.

That was quite a shock for this reader too! It sounded terrible and I'm not surprised Lucille thought she was dying. And Glover missed it all! Lady's work after all! But some lovely writing here capturing the hysteria and panic of a new mother and the resilient, no-nonsense (albeit shaking inside) Annie. Some small edits: She insisted (on) sitting in the rocking chair; (It's) already past my stomach; she forced herself to ke(ep) going.
Another enjoyable chapter, Beth. Take care Debbie
