thanks for the laughs. You have a great sense of humor although the bit about pliers to pull teeth would have traumatized me a child. This must have taken place before cell phones which keep my grandchildren busy if the conversation is dull. Smile.

Unfortunately, I never once got to use those pliers!
Yes, indeed it was before cell phones--the scourge of modern family time, unless the parents put their feet down about no phones at the dinner table. I always hate to see that when eating out at a restaurant where no one is talking and everyone is busy on their phones.

I love how when Greg puts Shadow in the refrigerator, you're concerned about the shelf, but not the cat in the refrigerator, LOL!
Jim, I have to tell you, this sounds exactly like one of the dinner time conversations in our home when the kids were growing up. We always insisted the four of us be together that one time of the day, and we talked about everything over the years. There were times the kids would gripe if they couldn't go to a friend's until after dinner, or had to come home by dinner, but now they tell us they're so glad we had that tradition.
This was a fun read and I enjoyed it.

Yep, we always insisted on dinner together too. It's a pity more families don't do that today, as it helps bring them closer together.
Glad you enjoyed this, Pam. Sounds like we had similar family values.

Lol. Sounds like many families I could name. Very humorous insight into your family life. I'm glad the cat was let out of the fridge in time. What a thing to do. No wonder his sister got a fright! Well written. I'd be interested to know what the next topic of conversation was ....

Thanks so much for your great review and the 6 stars too, Wendy. I could probably write a book about dinner with the family. Very fond memories of those times.

More lovely writing, Jim, and excerpts from your fantastic family life. Always take time to consider how incredibly blessed you are to experience these things. When I was at home we always sat down to an evening meal together as a family. Such times are precious.

They are indeed prescious and I feel sorry for the families that don't sit down together at least once a day; they don't know what they're missing. Thanks for your wonderful review, John.

This was so cute! And it warms my heart to see how you spent time together and encouraged conversation at the dinner table. This has become more rare these days and I'm so glad that your kids have these great memories of talking at the table. Poor Greg had to tolerate a lot of name-calling. And poor Shadow!! Hope she was in the fridge for only a few seconds - she could have suffocated! And Elise can tolerate the smell of Swiss cheese but not canned tuna?

I'd like to think Greg knew his sister would be by to open the fridge in a minute or two! Actually, the one who took the most grief from us in the family was Linds. She was eminently teasable because she reacted so well to it. Played the role of outrage perfectly! We had a lot of fun times together.
In a couple of weeks, we'll all be together again, along with grandchildren too to celebrate Elise's and my 50th wedding anniversary. I think they've got something fun planned for that!

Wow! 50 years!! So wonderful! You have 8 years more than us. A doubly blessed wedding anniversary plus Christmas!!

Thanks so much, Helen!

Interesting. So, you call your wife, Mom. Well, you've proven that all it takes is to start talking and life takes over. People will talk.
notes:
Greg started wiggling his tooth then. "Is that tooth getting loose?" asked Mom.

I guess if Greg had been a smartass, he might have said something like, "Gee, Mom, what gave you that idea? Was it the fact that I'm wiggling it back and forth about an inch in each direction?" But he was rather guileless.

This is certainly an interesting table conversation. You just threw out one word, cheese, and it was off to the races (or more accurately) the amusement park, loose teeth, cat in the refrigerator, and vertigo stomach. This is amusing.

Thanks, Carol. Once started, they seemed to take on a life of their own. Thanks for your great review.

I never thought about the problem with homophones with the listening issue. One of the writers on here tried to dictate his entire story and he must have had a dialect. It did not go well at all. At least he could laugh at it.

Now that's funny!

I really enjoyed this wide-ranging discussion of topics, as well as your skillful way of drawing children out and getting them talking by starting with a benign subject like cheese. I really like the energy, spirit and fun of your conversation and how it reveals the different personalities in your house - and the very unexpected things kids say sometimes! :)

Sometimes, all it took was a little nudge to get things going. Despite the complaints about the food, family dinners were often a fun and memorable time. Thanks for your great review, Navada.

This was a cute short story that captured the essence of a family dinner. The oddest topics can be a conversation starter. And talks with kids go in such varied directions. Well done.

Sitting down together for dinner and talking to each other was one of the things that helped make our family close. It's too bad so many families don't do that today. They don't know what they're missing.

Hahahahahah!! This is adorable...and what a great example of why eating together as a family is so important. Do your kids have any memories of the 'cheese conversation?" I'm sure they have others, though, as they grew. It was fun to be a fly on the Wile family wall. Thanks for the experience!!

I asked my daughter that when she called last night, and she said she didn't remember that specifically, but it sounds like something I would have said. I just texted my son who has a better memory to see if he remembers it. I'll let you know.
-
Please!
-
Yeah, he remembered it, but not what he said to his sister. I may have made that part up, but it was typical of what he might have said to her. They teased each other a lot, but they always had a great relationship (and still do.)
-
Very cool, indeed.
