Very beautifully written poem. It has a beautiful overall presentation and photo. I like your choice of words. It honours those we served with and those who fell. So many today you appear to have lost respect for the symbolism of so many things. They have no concept of the real price that was/is paid for this hat, nor any other symbol of real value.
I suppose that's because they have never had to face overwhelming odds in their lives and we have failed to remind them of respect due. Tie this up to how our very history is being manipulated and attempts at re-writing history leads only to confusion and sadly indifference to the significance and value of those who understand the cost.
You say it all and you tell it well.

How cavalier, thoughtless and sad that people will sport something that has no meaning to then, not realizing how it makes them look. As a columnist, I saw someone in a "cool" graphic on a T-shirt and asked what it meant, hoping to get a "cool" story. He said, "I have no idea. It's just something my wife picked up at a garage sale." It could have been a satanic symbol! I'm glad it wasn't a military emblem..
