Hello Barbara,
I'm so glad you're sharing this. Sometimes we all have to be forced out of our comfort zone, and in so doing, we discover things about ourselves that we didn't know. Volunteering can be such a fulfilling thing to do, and seeing others who aren't so fortunate as yourself can certainly give you a different perspective on life. Well done gal.
Have a blessed day.

Thank you for understanding. Andrew still has a heart for volunteering.

This is a really good story. I can remember making the same deal with my kids and they all wanted to go back the next year. I think church camps and projects particularly help them draw closer to God, as you noticed. Your son admitting he broke the pipe and then pointing out they needed new pipes was amusing and obviously part of God's plan.

Thank you for the understanding. God does work in mysterious ways.

It does do children good to learn about life in the real world, and you were right about how it would do Andrew good. As you say, he grew up to be a fine God loving man. I liked this one, Barbara. :) Sandra xx

Thank you for the understanding. I can't say this about all of my boys, but Andrew is still a special person.

Andrew will be 39 in December and he continues to make me very proud. Not just because I'm his mother, but because of who is. I don't say that about all my boys. I love Jeff dearly, but he continues to be a real stinker and I'm always praying God keeps control over him. LOL Thank you.

My parents sent us to Christian summer camp for two weeks when we were young, we did this for several years. My sister Kathy and I went together. The first couple of nights I was very home sick. And I was probably the smallest in size. I got picked on until my sister talked to me and we divised a plan to get them back. We collected people who had been picked on by the snotty folks, and we became stars in thinking up stuff to do to get back at them. Small things like hiding their toilet paper, pouring a cup-full of water in the middle of the bed, spitting in ther chocolate milk. We came up with ideas whenever some one came to us. No harm ever done. No one ever got hurt. Those older girls got better behaving quickly. We made lots of handiwork that we sold for money to donate to the local church. I couldn't paint but I could sew. I still like to hand sew. Karen

Andrew didn't have these issues, but he'd been away at Boy Scout Camps before. I think the oversees held a tight reign over these teens. Thank you for the kind review and sharing your story.

Barbara that was such a good memory of your son. And an example of God's sense of humor. He works in mysterious ways. You must be so proud of the man Andrew has become. Esther

This is a great coming of age story, and also a story of how God can turn situations we find frustrating into something that builds character and grows compassion in our hearts. I thought you put plenty of personality in the writing and this is another of those tales of how hard it is to be an army spouse, moving the kids from school to school and between friends, and being left on your own for lengths of time. estory

Those learning experiences for Andrew were surely something he'll never forget. I can remember those times when I took part in working and building on homes for the needy, and even today, when I drive my those houses I'm proud. Thanks for sharing.
