This poem, Moments at the Microwave, delivers the sad message that the time saving device seems to capture one's attention and create a sphere of wasted time.

This is better than brilliant. Sadly, I don't have the six it truly deserves. I've now read this twice, I'm a glutton for punishment. And in all honesty, I think I've on the site for more than twenty years and in that time, I cannot recall a better poem than this. Tomorrow I'm planning on checking out your portfolio, sorry, I meant your poetry portfolio. You are a great writer.

If I happen to stand at the microwave, I do exercises. I normally find something in the kitchen or living room to clean. Of course, I'm ADD so standing there isn't really an option for me. I did enjoy reading and thank you for sharing this poem with us.

It is a bit of a contradiction - it saves time when cooking food but we stare at the numbers on the screen waiting for it to beep. I often wish I could be doing something else while waiting.

Microwaves are quick, but wasting time watching something to cook is a different matter! My daughter calls these meals (Ding Dinners)! Ha ha ha. My lunch does not take long to prepare, and when we are hungry we want to eat straight away. Your poem made me smile, love Dolly x x x

    Thanks so much! My microwave is actually non-functioning (for the last 6 months) and, aside from a couple things, I really don't miss it that much.

You have the heart of a poet. Indeed is a scribe, how many have lived in that realm the heart of a poet and also like the inquiring of the mind of the scientist, also, one seeks wisdom, the other knowledge, beautifully written, blessings Roy

This is absolutely HILARIOUS!! I love the visual of you watching your food doing pirouettes before you as you count the seconds down. It's like what my daughter did one time in front of the dryer's see-through window as she watched her security blanket dry. (Her head kept going in circles with the contents of the machine.)

I honestly don't think you'd save much time, Gail, by not standing there. It's like the people who text "thx" of "ty." I've actually asked some of them, "Hey, what do you do with all that time you save by not writing out the words 'thank you?'" One - a male - texted back "F*** you!" to which I replied, "In THAT short a time? No WONDER you're single." {We've teased each other like that since college.}

Anyway, I LOVED this poem, with its catchy, perfect rhymes and meter, and hilarious story line. You are a seriously talented writer. xoxox

    Thank you once again, Rachelle, for your delightful review. My problem is, if I didn't stand there and wait for it so I could take it out and eat it right away, I would start doing something else, get involved, ignore the bell, and my dinner would sit there getting cold until my stomach reminded me I made food a couple hours ago. Actually, my microwave has been non-functional for 6 months and, while inconvenient sometimes, I really don't miss it. BUT, if I did add up all those seconds wasted staring at it, I might have done something productive with the time--oh well, too late now!

    No, but the time isn't in a big clump; it's in 120 increments. Really, there is NOTHING else you can do in that amount of time but watch the numbers decline. I give you permission to stop feeling guilty...unless, like me, you're Jewish, and then you HAVE to feel guilty, because it's your birthright. xoxox

    I was raised Catholic and we get to feel guilty, too-LOL!

    Oh, yes! In fact, I understand Catholic mothers invented Jewish ones! xoxo

Microwaves are a life saver after the children leave home and there's only two to shop and cool for. i would be lost without it. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank so much! Mine's been broken for 6 months, but there are so many other things that need fixing first. It's inconvenient at times, but I really don't miss it too much.

A clever poem that makes you think about all the time we waste, not only cooking but other activities that take up our time. Well written and gives the reader points to ponder.
